Job Introduction

Here is a rare opportunity to join our highly customer-focused Burials and Registration team in Telford & Wrekin. We are looking to recruit a Burials/Registration Officer to complement our team.


This is a

permanent post

for 15 hours per week, to begin as soon as possible. It's forecasted the days will be Thursday and Friday, and you may be required to work weekends and late nights.


We are looking for someone who can offer the right blend of professionalism, empathy and absolute commitment to excellent customer service whilst working within a legislative framework.You will be responsible for:

Delivering all elements of birth registrations, marriage ceremonies, civil partnership ceremonies and British Citizenship ceremonies in accordance with the law and Home Office regulations. (Please note deaths are not included in this role due to the burials element of this position) Conducting non-statutory ceremonies, such as renewal of vows, baby naming and commitment ceremonies

.o Liaising with customers and colleagues to ensure that ceremonies are delivered to a high standard and in accordance with the law.

Maintaining all audit procedures, which ensure the safekeeping of records, data and secure stock items

.o Maintaining a working knowledge of the laws relating to registration services, regulations of the General Register Office, Home Office, Registration Handbooks, circulars, processes and council policies.

Delivering an end-to-end service, for all burials taking place within our three Council run cemeteries. Managing Deed of Grants, memorial applications, as well as being responsible for Public Health burials when they occur. Maintaining a working knowledge of the laws relating to burials within a Local Authority.

You will have:

Experience of working within a customer-facing environment, with a focus on providing high quality customer service. The ability and confidence to present ceremonies to large groups of people, sometimes with little notice. The ability to understand, interpret and adhere to legislation, regulations and policies. The ability to work on your own initiative and with minimal supervision

.o The ability to effectively plan, organise and coordinate events.

The ability to deal with sensitive and difficult situations.

Previous Registration or Burials experience is desirable but not essential; full training will be given.


This role will require you to be flexible, and you will sometimes be expected to work on weekends, at short notice and in the late evening. The successful post holder will also be expected to be included in our on-call rota on Sundays and bank holidays for any urgent burials, marriages or civil partnerships. This would equate roughly to one weekend in ten. In return, we can offer the post holder the opportunity to be a fundamental part of supporting key moments in people's lives.

: You may not be able to apply for this position if one of the following applies:

You are, or have been during the 12 months preceding the date on which the appointment is to take effect, a member of the Council or of a Committee of the Council having duties in relation to the appointment of Registration Officers

.o You hold any office as authorised person, secretary (for marriages) of a synagogue or registering officer of the Society of Friends.

You are a minister of religion, a medical practitioner, a midwife, an undertaker or other person concerned in a burial, or cremation business, a person engaged in any other calling which would conflict with or prevent the proper performance in person of the duties of the office for which you are a candidate

.o You are an officer or a servant of the Council appointed by them to exercise the functions of the Proper Officer. This includes the role of Councillor or Mayor.

You are a private celebrant, unless your work is carried out in another local authority, and has been agreed to prior to your appointment, and then authorised by the Superintendent Registrar.
