An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Business Development Team, part of the Business and Innovations Directorate (BID) at STFC as a Business Development Manager for the ISIS Neutron and Muon Facility. ISIS is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences, producing beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level. It supports a national and international community of more than 3000 visiting scientists per year, from industry and academia, who use ISIS for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering and biology.


You will work with and support the scientific and engineering staff to understand how the facility can help address the many and varied challenges faced by industry, seeking out new opportunities to grow and build impactful relationships with industry.

Key Responsibilities:



Strategic Engagement

: Identify and pursue new business opportunities by engaging stakeholders across government, industry, and the research community.

Pipeline Development

: Build and maintain a robust pipeline of business opportunities, ensuring alignment with ISIS's strategic priorities and long-term objectives.

Stakeholder Management

: Establish and nurture strong relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external, serving as a primary point of contact for business development activities.

Opportunity Development

: Scope and develop business cases and funding proposals in collaboration with technical and non-technical teams.

Market Intelligence

: Monitor developments and emerging trends in industry particularly related to the Government Industrial Strategy to inform strategic direction and identify new opportunities.

Reporting & Metrics

: Maintain relevant market landscape data, track engagement metrics, and report progress to the senior leadership.

Advocacy & Representation

: Promote ISIS's mission, capabilities, and outcomes to external audiences, representing the facility and STFC both nationally and internationally.

You should have an understanding of the vision, mission and goals of STFC, how this fits in the context of UKRI and the importance of generating impact and driving growth.

Person Specification:




The ideal candidate possesses a scientific or technical background in a relevant scientific discipline, along with an understanding of--or the ability to learn--neutron and muon-based analytical techniques. They demonstrate excellent leadership and management abilities, as well as the capacity to think strategically and contribute to broader corporate initiatives. Outcome-focused and resilient, they are skilled in negotiation, persuasion, and influencing others. The candidate excels in communication and relationship-building with both internal and external stakeholders, showing an ability to align and inspire others. Highly developed interpersonal and networking skills, strong team collaboration, and a high degree of corporate commitment further support their effectiveness in dynamic and demanding environments.


This role requires a broad range of skills, and the correct candidate will have a mixture of the skills listed below. The role will also require some travel within the UK and occasional travel overseas.

Essential

Strong track record in technical business development with demonstrable evidence of generating value and measurable impact. (S, I) Robust technical background and/or the ability to understand technical concepts and translate them into commercial opportunities. (S, I) Strong interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a team and manage relationships with various stakeholders. (I) Excellent communication, bid writing and presentation skills, able to articulate value propositions to a range of different stakeholders / audiences up to director level. (I) Excellent organisational skills including time management and task prioritization, with the ability to work to defined deadlines. (I) Extensive IT skills, including experience in MS Office Suite. (S) Self-starting completer / finisher with the ability to take leads through to contracts. (S, I)
