Role Overview
As Business Development Manager, you will play a pivotal role in driving company growth, expanding our client base, and identifying new business opportunities across general haulage (specifically, flatbed fleet). You will build and nurture relationships with clients (across diverse sectors), understand their transport and logistics needs, and coordinate with internal teams to deliver tailored, cost-effective solutions that meet -- or exceed -- expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Business Growth & Sales
Identify, target, and secure new business opportunities across the UK, including abnormal loads and flatbed/low-loader transport.
Develop and maintain relationships with prospective clients, partners, contractors, and stakeholders.
Present DUKE Distribution's service offerings, prepare and deliver proposals / bids, and negotiate contracts.
Client Relationship Management
Act as the main point of contact for key clients, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction and service delivery.
Work closely with operations, transport and logistics teams to ensure client requirements are clearly communicated and delivered.
Provide ongoing account management and after-care to encourage repeat business and referrals.
Market & Opportunity Analysis
Research and analyse market trends, competitor services, and industry developments (in construction, events, infrastructure, etc.) to identify new sectors or service niches for growth.
Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs), sales pipeline, and growth metrics.
Strategic Planning & Development
Implement strategic business development plans aligned with DUKE's growth strategy, including expansion of services, fleet utilisation, and market coverage.
Collaborate with senior management to shape service offerings, pricing strategies, and value propositions.
Provide input on resource planning, fleet expansion, and recruitment in line with business growth needs.
Branding & Representation
Represent DUKE Distribution at industry events, trade shows, customer meetings, and networking opportunities across the UK and Europe.
Promote company values -- professional capability, safety, reliability, and friendly family-run ethos -- in every client interaction.
Candidate Profile & Skills Required
Proven experience in business development, sales, or client-facing role -- in haulage, transport, logistics, construction, or heavy-lift/machinery sectors.
Strong understanding of haulage, transport and logistics services (flatbed, low-loader, abnormal loads, heavy machinery).
Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
Strong commercial and strategic thinking, with ability to identify and capitalise on business opportunities.
Self-motivated, proactive, target-driven, and comfortable working across multiple markets and geographies (UK only).
Ability to coordinate effectively with internal operations, understanding technical and regulatory constraints of haulage/heavy transport.
Professionalism and commitment to safety, compliance, and customer-first mindset (reflecting DUKE's values).
