We are looking for a Business Evaluation Executive to maximize shareholder value in Rio Tinto through rigorous independent evaluation of capital allocation, mergers & acquisitions, and divestment proposals in accordance with Rio Tinto group strategy and guidelines


This is a global role working across all product groups and includes advising and supporting project proponents on strategy, project evaluation methodology and governance requirements for major capital projects and commercial transactions to help ensure that proposals brought to the Capital and Investment Committees are at the required quality level to enable discussion and decision-making.


This is a great opportunity for a strong minded, analytically focused subject matter expert to guide the business units to ensure rigour and consistency in application of Rio Tinto's valuation methodology. This role will work closely with the PG heads, Investment Committee, BU commercial and financial teams at senior levels.


Reporting to the Head of Business Evaluation and working in a collaborative community, a challenging and exciting environment, you will be:

Delivering independent analysis, review & advice to the Investment Committee on major investment, M&A and strategic/commercial decisions Determining the relative attractiveness of projects compared to the alternative investments available to Rio Tinto Supporting business unit commercial teams on strategy review and development, and financial/commercial evaluation Directing other BED project work such as budget plan reviews, post investment reviews, risk management and updates to evaluation methodology Evaluating and advising on financial and commercial aspects of Investment Committee proposals such as central value case, options value, investment risk, finance structure, tax implications, marketing strategy etc. Researching and evaluating information (e.g. financial, industry, competitor, market) for strategic analysis and developing conclusions; understanding value and applicability of advanced methods of financial evaluation Interacting with stakeholders across the group, across levels including BU MDs, TEG, Economics, Legal, Tax, Controllers, Treasury

What you'll bring



A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team Graduate qualification in business/economics or technical disciplines (e.g. engineering or science); MBA or other postgraduate business/finance/economics qualification will be desirable Significant relevant experience in business evaluation Intellectual confidence and subject matter knowledge that will enable this person to 'hold the line' effectively (while maintaining relationships) with senior executives in product groups and functions Strong financial analysis skills, from reading accounts to building large, complicated evaluation spreadsheets to evaluating financial & deal structures High level understanding of resources business fundamentals and strategy Knowledge of macroeconomics as well as skills in reviewing legal agreements An in-depth understanding of business and commercial realities

Where you will be working



BED is a small corporate team within the Finance Group of Rio Tinto. The mandate of BED encompasses (i) the independent evaluation of Group capital allocation proposals and major commercial transactions, in particular providing support to the Capital Committee and Investment Committee on these decisions, (ii) custodianship (and further development of) Group-level internal valuation methods and models and (iii) managing the Group's capital allocation process.
