Business Mentors
to support:
Immediate opportunities
within the self-employment and enterprise programme at
HMP Onley
Future mentoring delivery
with individuals, charities, probation services, and employers
Ad hoc business coaching, pre-release planning, and post-release support
About the Role
As a Business Mentor with Bhuku, you'll provide tailored one-to-one mentoring to individuals who are exploring or preparing for self-employment -- either during custody, post-release, or in the community.
Your role is to build trust, inspire confidence, and help individuals take practical next steps towards launching or sustaining their own businesses.
Key Responsibilities
Offer one-to-one mentoring support to individuals in prison or the community
Provide advice on business planning, marketing, pricing, funding and sustainability
Help learners reflect on their skills and experience to shape viable business ideas
Review and provide feedback on draft business plans or proposals
Signpost to relevant funding, enterprise support and resources
Maintain accurate records and short progress updates as required
For HMP work: liaise with Bhuku trainers and prison staff to support continuity
For community work: deliver via phone, Zoom or in-person as agreed

Business Mentors

HMP Onley contract
, starting in
September 2025
. This involves:
Ad hoc mentoring alongside our 5-day business course (1 week/month, on-site)
Remote or in-person follow-up support with participants post-release
Optional involvement in reviewing learner business plans or giving group feedback
About You
Essential:
Experience running or supporting small businesses or freelancers
Strong interpersonal and mentoring/coaching skills
Ability to listen, challenge positively and offer practical advice
Strong organisational skills and record keeping
Able to work flexibly and independently
For prison-based work: must pass Enhanced Level 2 vetting (5-year UK address history)
Desirable:
Experience in justice, youth, or social enterprise settings
Mentoring, coaching or teaching qualification
Knowledge of trauma-informed practice or supporting vulnerable adults
Ability to support learners with additional needs (SEND, ESOL, etc.)
