The Hereford operation is the major UK production facility in PCC Metals & Forgings Group and we now have an exciting/ challenging opportunity for a Business Unit Manager to join the Special Metals Wiggin (SMW) team.

Role Summary:



Reporting to the Plant General Manager will have responsibility for managing the day-to-day Safety, Quality, Throughput and Cost for all plant Business Units. In conjunction with the Manufacturing Manager, the position is responsible for maximizing individual and plant-wide productivity, quality and technical skill development to ensure on-time shipments and customer satisfaction, as well as reducing variable costs. The focus of the role will be to execute the daily, weekly plans for the plant, managing the manpower and other resources to carry them out in an efficient and productive manner. This is a pro-active as well as a reactive role. The role is an integral part of the Senior Management team.

Safety - Is accountable for Leading the HSE legislative requirements and Zero Harm processes. Quality - Is accountable for delivery of the Zero Defects programme and adherence to quality standards and procedures. Throughput - Accountable for the TOC Lines and On-Time to Schedule for the Business Unit. Staffing - Must Staff to the Throughput and Labour Plan (ESH Target, OT Plan, Holidays and Sickness absence management etc). Daily work plans - Must achieve Quality and Throughput Goals, Targets & Expectations for the Business Unit. Daily Flex - Is accountable for the Business Unit P&L. Frequent follow up - responsible for ensuring production plans are available and adhered to at key resources.

Essential Functions:



Is accountable for driving the Zero Harm Processes, ensuring valid analysis of Risk Profiles are in place with actions supporting achievement of risk reduction in line with target. Is accountable for driving of Zero Defects Processes in support of plant initiatives, ensuring ZDP processes are supported appropriately by Operations and improvement actions are in place, owned and completed on time. Is accountable for establishing the ESH & Productivity targets for BU per quarter based on sales Budget, ESH and staffing model to set Headcount levels and productivity targets. Is accountable for the delivery of BU targets through delegation of objectives to the Production Managers and monitoring daily via flex/ TOC reports, identifying recovery actions as required to achieve Qtr. Plan. Is responsible for Capacity modelling by BU to identify bottlenecks/ constraints with appropriate plans to ensure sufficient capacity to support Budget. HSE Initiatives
o Will represent production in monthly HSE meeting and is accountable for action close out.

o Will develop a process to communicate and manage the implementation of all new HSE initiatives and will be responsible for ongoing monitoring and compliance.

Is accountable for reviewing submitted suggestions and implementation of approved ideas. Is responsible for the management of Excess & Obsolete (E&O) material in WIP to achieve quarter budget. Will be accountable for leading, motivating and engaging with Production Managers through effective communication e.g. team briefings, regular interaction on shopfloor, involvement of team in projects and initiatives. Will be responsible for the management of Production Managers to include objective setting, performance reviews, absence management. Is accountable for ensuring the daily TOC and flex targets are achieved in line with the production plan. Will lead the production team to establish priorities relating to plant requirements, communicating with supporting departments to ensure business needs are met. Is responsible for identifying improvements for internal and external quality, cost and on-time delivery to the customer requirements. Is responsible for all aspects of recruiting and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; evaluating and appraising individual performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Is accountable for flexibility of the workforce to address skills gaps and create an adaptable workforce and will be responsible for Training Needs Analysis for the team. Will control departmental budget through the daily flex and management of outwork. Will drive the production team to use process Improvement and Lean Manufacturing Tools such as SPC, FMEAs, 6S and Lean Sigma structured problem-solving techniques to drive improvements. Will be an area owner for 6S and attend weekly meetings communicate updates to all members of Operations team. Is accountable for ensuring Operation adherence to Preventative Maintenance Plan and will attend weekly Planned Maintenance review meeting. Will work with Human Resources on people management issues including disciplinaries, grievances and performance related issues. Will develop a working relationship with union representatives, keeping them informed of decisions and changes within the plant.

Education/ Qualification/ Knowledge:



Must be either of graduate calibre with management diploma and/or have equivalent experience within a management role in a unionized environment. Will have professional advancement in a manufacturing environment. Able to interpret high level business objectives into day-to-day plans and roll out and delegate to teams, able to clearly identify day to day priorities and create action plans to deliver. Demonstrable computer skills.

Required Experience:



Demonstrated experience in a similar role in a manufacturing environment preferably in an aerospace. Demonstrated experience and exposure to a union environment would be advantageous. Demonstrated experience in managing people (development and managing performance), managing information (effective budget control and communication activities), managing activities (prioritizing activities, continuous improvement activities) and managing systems (including knowledge of ISO9001, OSHA18001 and ISO14001).

Must be able to demonstrate a range of leadership skills such as delegation, coaching and support while able to interpret and challenge traditional behaviors and practices. Will be an effective leader and act in a manner that maintains a positive and productive work environment with customers, clients, co-workers and supervisors. Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels are essential. Working knowledge of Continuous improvements methodology and appropriate coaching and teaching skills are an advantage. A willingness to be trained to a Green Belt standard in Lean Six sigma.
