Role Overview
The Cafe Lead is responsible for the day-to-day running of the community cafe, ensuring excellent standards of food hygiene, safety, and customer service. The role includes managing and supporting cafe volunteers, maintaining stock levels, ordering supplies, and creating a warm and welcoming environment for all visitors.
The Cafe Lead plays a key role in making the cafe a friendly, inclusive space that encourages community engagement and supports the wider aims of the organisation.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Cafe Operations
Oversee the daily running of the cafe to ensure smooth, efficient, and friendly service.
Prepare and serve food and drinks in line with hygiene and quality standards.
Ensure the cafe is clean, tidy, and well-presented at all times.
Manage cash handling and maintain accurate daily records of sales and expenditure.
2. Food Hygiene & Safety
Take full responsibility for food hygiene compliance, ensuring all operations meet Environmental Health and Food Standards Agency requirements.
Maintain up-to-date food hygiene certification and documentation.
Complete daily checks (temperature logs, cleaning schedules, allergen records).
Ensure volunteers follow hygiene and safety procedures at all times.
3. Stock Control & Ordering
Monitor stock levels and place timely orders for food, beverages, and consumables.
Manage supplier relationships and ensure cost-effective purchasing.
Track usage to reduce waste and maintain budget efficiency.
Maintain clear records of orders, deliveries, and stock rotation.
4. Volunteer Management & Support
Train and supervise cafe volunteers, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities.
Provide ongoing guidance, encouragement, and feedback to volunteers.
Promote a positive and inclusive volunteer culture.
5. Customer Experience & Community Spirit
Create a welcoming atmosphere for all cafe visitors, including community groups using the space.
Represent the values of the organisation through excellent service and communication.
Support events or community activities taking place in or around the cafe as needed.
6. Administration & Reporting
Keep accurate records of cafe operations, volunteer hours, and income/expenditure.
Report to the Store Manager on cafe performance and any issues.
Ensure compliance with organisational policies and procedures.
Skills and Experience
Essential:
Strong organisational and multitasking skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of health and safety and allergen regulations.
Experience working in a cafe, catering, or hospitality setting.
Experience managing or supervising volunteers or staff.
Commitment to the organisation's community values.
Ability to lead, motivate, and support volunteers.
Food Hygiene Level 2 (or willingness to obtain).
Desirable:
Experience managing stock, budgets, or ordering processes.
Any additional relevant certifications, e.g., first aid or supervisory training
