About the team
For over 40 years Hertfordshire Music Service has successfully delivered musical opportunities to generations of young people throughout the county. The service is now one of the largest in the country with many thousands of young people involved in our weekly musical activities, supported by over 400 teachers.
We receive funding from the Department for Education through the Arts Council England, as well as generous support from Hertfordshire County Council to provide world class music tuition to the residents and families of Hertfordshire.

Our 11 music centres across the county are local musical community hubs with the ambition of providing engaging, life-long music education as well as a wider variety of activities including music technology, music production and youth leadership opportunities.

About the role
Key Responsibilities
Site Maintenance & Safety

• Conduct daily visual inspections of the premises, ensuring heating, lighting, alarm systems, and other facilities are functioning correctly.
• Report faults, hazards, or maintenance issues promptly to the appropriate personnel.
• Carry out minor repairs and maintenance tasks where appropriate.
• Ensure external areas (e.g., entrances, pathways) are safe and tidy.

Health & Safety

• Demonstrate a proactive approach to Health & Safety, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures.
• Complete Health & Safety training as required.
• Support the implementation of risk assessments and emergency procedures.
• Maintain accurate records of safety checks and incidents.

Operational Support

• Set up and dismantle rooms for music lessons, rehearsals, and events, including moving instruments, chairs, tables, and other equipment.
• Assist with the unlocking and locking of the centre at the beginning and end of the day.
• Support the logistics of musical tuition, including room preparation and equipment availability.
• Monitor and replenish cleaning and maintenance supplies as needed.

General Duties

• Maintain a professional and approachable presence on site.
• Liaise effectively with staff, tutors, students, and visitors to support the smooth running of the centre.
• Assist with deliveries and storage of equipment and materials.

About you
Essential:

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to prioritise workload and manage time effectively.
• Organised, reliable, and self-motivated.
• Basic understanding of Health & Safety best practices.
• Willingness to undertake relevant training and development.
• Physically able to carry out manual handling tasks (e.g., moving equipment).

Desirable:

• Previous experience in a similar caretaker or facilities role.
• Familiarity with working in an educational or arts environment.
• Basic IT skills for reporting and training purposes.
• Driving license and access to a vehicle.
