Job Purpose

The Caretaker with Support Duties will be responsible for the general upkeep, safety, and maintenance of both the Aspace2 Day Opportunities building and the Aspace2 Multisensory Centre. In addition to maintenance responsibilities, the role includes supporting young men with disabilities to engage in DIY-based activities as part of their personal development and engagement. This role plays a vital part in ensuring that the environment remains safe, welcoming, and inclusive for all users.

Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesBuilding and Site Maintenance

- Carry out routine repairs and maintenance (e.g. minor plumbing, electrical, painting, and joinery tasks).

- Perform regular inspections of the buildings, reporting any issues requiring external contractors.

- Liaise with contractors when work is required and supervise on-site as needed.

- Keep all areas, including entrances, corridors, toilets, and communal spaces, in good working order.

External Grounds

- Maintain outdoor areas including pathways, car parks, and garden spaces.

- Undertake seasonal duties such as leaf clearing, snow/ice removal, and basic groundskeeping.

Support Duties

- Support young people with disabilities to participate in practical DIY activities such as painting, basic carpentry, and simple maintenance tasks.

- Encourage independence and confidence-building through guided, hands-on support in planned DIY sessions.

- Collaborate with staff to identify suitable activities that align with individual needs and interests.

Health and Safety

- Ensure the premises comply with relevant health and safety regulations.

- Carry out routine safety checks including fire alarm tests, emergency lighting checks, and water temperature monitoring for legionella control.

- Keep accurate records of all maintenance and safety checks.

Security

- Open and/or lock up the buildings as required, ensuring the premises are secure at all times.

- Monitor any security systems and respond to any issues relating to site access or alarms.

General Support

- Assist with setting up rooms or spaces for activities and events.

- Respond to staff requests for minor repairs or adjustments to facilities.

- Maintain stocks of tools, cleaning, and maintenance supplies and reorder as necessary.

- Undertake any other reasonable duties as required to support the smooth running of the service.

Person SpecificationEssential

- Basic skills in general building maintenance and repairs.

- Ability to support individuals with additional needs in a respectful and person-centred way.

- A practical, hands-on approach with a can-do attitude.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

- Good understanding of health and safety.

- Friendly, reliable, and approachable.

Desirable

- Previous experience in a similar caretaker or facilities role.

- Experience supporting people with learning disabilities or autism.

- Experience in care, education, or community settings.

- Knowledge of or willingness to learn how to maintain sensory equipment.

Additional Requirements

- A satisfactory Enhanced ACCESSNI check (or willingness to apply).

- A full, clean UK driving licence is essential.

Job Types: Part-time, Permanent

Pay: 12.25 per hour
