The role involves delivering
two sessions per week (2.5 hours each)
, using chess as a tool to develop:
Confidence and resilience
Focus, patience, and planning
Positive peer relationships
Problem solving and strategic thinking
You will deliver small-group teaching (10-16 learners) and occasional 1:1 support. Sessions must be calm, purposeful, and structured. This role is highly rewarding and suitable for someone who wants to make a meaningful impact in a rehabilitative environment.

Key Responsibilities
You will:
Plan and deliver structured chess learning sessions (group & 1:1)
Support learners of all abilities, including those with neurodiverse needs or low literacy
Promote the club across the prison and encourage learner participation
Track attendance and learner progress
Complete short weekly admin tasks (attendance reporting, session reflections)
Maintain professional boundaries and adhere to all HMPPS security requirements
Bhuku provides full lesson plans, resources, chess sets and support -- you bring the energy & facilitation skills.

About You
You don't need to be a chess master -- just confident in chess and able to explain strategy.
Essential:
Strong chess knowledge (able to teach rules, tactics, and basic strategy)
Excellent communication and group facilitation skills
Ability to manage behaviour and build rapport with diverse learners
Organised and able to maintain basic session documentation
Desirable:
Experience in teaching, coaching, mentoring or youth/community work
Experience supporting adults with SEND or neurodiversity
Experience in prisons, alternative education, or similar environments (not essential)

Important Requirements
Must pass prison
vetting and security clearance
(we support this process)
Must have the right to work in the UK - we are unable to sponsor visas at this time
Must hold ID documentation required for vetting (passport, proof of address, etc.)
Must attend onsite induction and mandatory security briefings before delivery starts
