Job Description

To support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), including developmental delay, autism, and other complex needs, to live as independently as possible and to experience fulfilling home and community lives.

Key Responsibilities



Care and Support



Provide high-quality care to children and young people while actively promoting independence. Plan and participate in recreational and developmental activities both in and outside the home, including sporting activities, day trips, and community engagement. Act as a Key Worker for allocated children and young people. Communicate effectively and appropriately, taking into account individual communication needs. Maintain accurate and timely records that reflect each child or young person's experiences and progress. Use electronic recording systems to log relevant information.

Team and Professional Responsibilities



Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure PCC's mission, aims, and objectives are achieved. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation impacting the role. Participate in mandatory training, supervision, and appraisal processes. Proactively seek opportunities for personal and professional development.

Organisational and Partnership Working



Support colleagues and contribute to the smooth running of the home, including covering duties during staff absences. Undertake additional duties within capability, including light domestic tasks where required. Work as part of a team to coordinate and deliver activities supporting children, young people, and the home. Maintain professional relationships with parents/carers, colleagues, external professionals, and partner agencies.

Person SpecificationEssential



Minimum of 6 months' experience working with children and young people with additional needs. NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (Children and Young People) or equivalent, or willingness to work towards this. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, bank holidays, and night shifts. Ability to build and maintain appropriate professional relationships and boundaries. Good understanding of safeguarding, safe caring practices, and promoting welfare. Reliable, punctual, and flexible approach to work. Ability to follow organisational policies and procedures. Emotional resilience and ability to manage challenging situations. Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately. Strong teamwork skills. Ability to plan and coordinate activities collaboratively. Flexible and responsive to the changing needs of children and young people. Good understanding of Equality and Diversity.

Desirable



Good written communication skills. Basic IT skills. Confidence in using computers and learning new data systems. Knowledge of current childcare and disability-related legislation. Understanding of how life experiences can impact emotional wellbeing. Creative and solution-focused approach to problem-solving. Skilled in recognising and responding to children and young people's needs.
