About the Role
Working alongside an experienced leadership team, you'll receive full training and guidance to support your professional growth. This is a key role requiring vigilance, empathy, and a consistent, nurturing presence to ensure a safe and supportive environment throughout the night.
Key Responsibilities
General Care & Nighttime Support
Ensure the safety, welfare, and wellbeing of young people overnight
Promote calm, structured routines that support healthy sleep
Maintain professional boundaries and follow safeguarding protocols
Nighttime Supervision & Monitoring
Complete regular welfare checks and ensure all areas are secure
Monitor for and respond to behavioural incidents using trauma-informed approaches
Maintain a quiet, safe atmosphere throughout the night
Emotional Support & Reassurance
Offer calm, comforting support to children experiencing anxiety or distress
Encourage healthy sleep hygiene and provide a soothing presence
Be a stable point of contact during any overnight difficulties
Incident Response & Safeguarding
De-escalate challenging situations using approved techniques
Record and report significant events accurately and promptly
Alert senior staff or on-call management in emergencies
Health, Safety & Medication
Carry out routine safety checks, including fire and perimeter security
Administer medication in line with policy and maintain MAR charts
Identify and respond to potential risks or hazards
Housekeeping & Domestic Duties
Keep communal and kitchen areas clean and tidy
Support with light household tasks such as laundry and breakfast prep
Ensure hygiene standards are maintained overnight
Morning Transition Support
Wake young people in a calm and supportive manner
Assist with morning routines and personal care
Prepare and supervise breakfast, helping to set a positive tone for the day
Record-Keeping & Communication
Maintain detailed, accurate records of incidents and observations
Complete monitoring logs, medication records, and shift handovers
Ensure all documentation meets regulatory and organisational standards
Training, Development & Teamwork
Attend all mandatory and refresher training (e.g. safeguarding, first aid, restraint)
Participate in supervision, debriefs, and reflective practice
Work collaboratively with the wider team to provide consistent care
Communicate clearly across shifts to ensure continuity and transparency
Compliance & Professional Standards
Adhere to Children's Homes Regulations (2015), Ofsted standards, and all policies
Maintain strict confidentiality and data protection protocols
What We're Looking For
Minimum 1 year of experience in residential childcare or similar care setting (preferred)
Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or working towards it)
A calm, observant, and nurturing approach to night care
Strong communication skills and emotional maturity
A solid understanding of safeguarding and trauma-informed practice
Full UK driving licence (preferred)
