Children's Residential Support Worker

Reports to:

Registered Manager / Deputy manager / Senior Team Leader

Salary Scale:

Up to 29,120.00 per annum. additional sleeps paid separately at 55 per sleep, up to 8 sleeps per month. In addition there is a discretionary bonus program with performance bonuses allowing additional earnings of 1200 per year

Requirements

Relevant Qualification



Essential

: Willingness to work towards or hold NVQ/QCF/CYP Level 3 Health and Social Care (Children and Young People) or equivalent.

Desirable

: Additional qualifications related to the care sector; Level 4 or above in a relevant field.

Experience & Knowledge



Essential

: Previous experience of working with children or young people in a residential setting. Experience managing challenging behaviours and complex needs, including emotional and behavioural difficulties. Knowledge of safeguarding principles and relevant legislation (Children's Act 1989/2004, Working Together to Safeguard Children 2015). Understanding of multi-agency working and equal opportunities.

Desirable

: Knowledge of human growth, development, and the effects of trauma. Familiarity with the Children's Homes Regulations 2015, Leaving Care Act 2000, OFSTED inspection framework (SCCIF). Experience working with young people experiencing mental health issues, anxiety disorders, or specific conditions (Autism, Asperger's, ADHD, ADD, ODD).

: Strong communication skills (written and oral) with children, families, colleagues, and external agencies. Ability to maintain appropriate routines, boundaries, and role model positive behaviours. Effective recording, reporting, and administrative skills. Teamwork, initiative, and the ability to self-motivate. Capacity to handle crises and challenging behaviours calmly and professionally. A commitment to maintaining high standards of care in line with legislation and organisational policies.

: Skills in assessment, planning, and decision-making.

: High level of emotional awareness (in self and others). Adaptability and willingness to respond positively to change. Commitment to the principles of safe caring and openness. Passion for enabling young people to reach their full potential.

Other



Essential

: Full, current UK driving licence (the post holder is required to be a driver). Good IT and report-writing skills. Flexibility to work shifts (including weekends, evenings, sleep-ins, and holiday periods).

Responsibilities

Therapeutic Care & Positive Relationships

Promote and maintain a nurturing, respectful, and empowering environment for all children. Provide consistent routines, boundaries, and high-quality therapeutic support. Serve as a positive role model at all times, demonstrating professional standards of behaviour.

Key Working & Support Plans

Act as a key worker for individual young people, ensuring the implementation of personalised care plans. Attend child care reviews, contribute to assessments, and actively participate in young people's reviews. Support educational development by encouraging school attendance and helping with homework.

Activities & Daily Living

Develop and participate in social, recreational, and educational activities tailored to individual and group needs. Promote independent living skills by involving young people in domestic tasks and day-to-day decision-making.

Collaboration & Safeguarding

Liaise with parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure young people's best interests are upheld. Maintain accurate records and reports in accordance with organisational policies and regulatory requirements. Stay informed about the latest developments, research, and best practices in childcare.

Professional Conduct

Work within the current legislative framework and organisation's policies and procedures. Engage in ongoing training, supervision, and personal development, including mandatory physical intervention and first aid training. Uphold the organisational commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
