ABOUT THE ROLE


------------------


The CEGE Civil Engineering workshop facility is located on the London Bloomsbury campus. Its purpose is to provide practical technical support to departmental academics, researchers, and students in the design, manufacture, assembly, and testing of bespoke novel scientific equipment. The Civil Engineering workshop also provides support to the department's laboratories and undergraduate and postgraduate student projects. The role includes working across all three department sites.



CEGE is based on the Bloomsbury campus and features extensive teaching and research laboratories. The department also operates a structural and environmental testing facility for large-scale experiments in Stratford, East London Welcome to UCL at Here East | UCL at Here East - UCL - University College London.



In Dagenham, CEGE hosts two unique research environments: the Person-Environment-Activity Research Laboratory (PEARL) Welcome to PEARL | Person Environment Activity Research Laboratory - UCL - University College London, which investigates how people interact with their surroundings, and the Clean Active Ventilation Environments (CAVE) laboratory, focused on innovative ventilation systems. Main Duties and Responsibilities

Line manage, lead, support and develop the Civil Engineering workshop technical team, including apprentices and trainees assigned to them Provide practical advice in the design of, novel experimental devices, complex equipment and test specimens with reference to material selection and manufacture of components and/or complete systems to improve performance reliability and ease of manufacture in a workshop and laboratory experimentation setting. Manufacture prototypes, either totally fabricated in-house in the Civil Engineering workshop or adapted from commercially available devices and equipment. Manage H&S in the Civil Engineering workshop to maintain compliance with H&S legislation, UCL and CEGE health & Safety policy and procedures. Act as the responsible person for lifting equipment and local exhaust ventilation (LEV), ensuring adherence to LOLER regulations 1998 and compliance with PUWER 1998. Use a range of engineering workshop machinery, equipment and hand tools to manufacture components, assemblies and specimens ranging in size, weight and complexity in a wide range of materials, such as metals, plastics, wood, concrete and composites

ABOUT YOU

Key requirements of the role are:




HND/HNC or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering subject or equivalent extensive skills and knowledge, demonstrable through career experience Demonstrable experience in a high-tech or a precision engineering industry or higher education, including experience of working within an engineering workshop for the manufacture and assembly of complex devices and the development of innovative designs. People management and leadership experience in an engineering R&D setting, with the ability to motivate teams and foster an inclusive collaborative culture to achieve shared objectives. Sound knowledge of statutory regulations for health and safety in an engineering workshop and/or laboratory setting. Ability to use a range of traditional engineering workshop machinery and equipment such as lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, band saws, sheet metal fabrication equipment. Use of CNC machinery, laser cutter and 3D printers would be advantageous, training will be provided to enhance skills set.
