Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

:

The Civils operative plays a key role in the delivery and maintenance of fibre optic networks by carrying out excavation, underground service chambers, ducting, cabling, and re-instatement works to industry and safety standards. The role ensures that underground and overground infrastructure is installed efficiently, safely and with minimal disruption, supporting the reliable rollout of high speed broadband services to residential and commercial customers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:



Excavate trenches, trial holes, and joint bays for installations of ducts, chambers and fibre optic cables.

Install, repair and maintain ducting, sub ducts, chambers, cabinets, and associated infrastructure.

Interpreting and understanding job packs and network drawings to accurately install telecommunication apparatus whilst also to specification.

Maintain accurate records of work completed including system updates, as-builds, and test results.

Ensure all documentation is complete and submitted within a timely manner. Task reports, Pre & Post installation check sheet, Point Of Work Risk Assessment (POWRA) and Splnyx.

Ensuring detailed handovers at the start and end of shifts to manager/supervisor.

Ensure compliance of all app's (e.g. Blip, Velocity, Vehicle check).

Pull and rod fibre cables through ducts and prepare routes for installation teams.

Operate plant and machinery safely e.g. mini diggers, breakers and compaction equipment.

Back fill, compact and reinstate surfaces (tarmac, paving, concrete, verge/grass) to required standards HSG47.

Identify and avoid existing utilities and services using CAT and GENNY or other detection equipment.

Ensures correct alignment and protection of infrastructure.

Ensure all activities comply with Health and Safety Standards, NRSWA regulations and reinstatement standards and company procedures.

Follow traffic management procedures to ensure site and public safety.

Support fibre installation teams when required (cable pulling, chamber access, assisting splicing teams).

Conduct safe working practices and encourage others to do so; to work within the parameters of PIA, industry standards and HSG47.

Maintain tools, plant and equipment in safe working condition.

Work to method statements, risk assessments, and site specific health and safety requirements.

Following safety protocols, especially when working near utilities or in public areas; using appropriate PPE and signage.

Working alongside fibre engineers who handle cable splicing and testing ensuring civils work is completed to allow timely fibre installation.

SKILLS REQUIRED:



Experience in groundwork or construction.

Knowledge of NRSWA (New Roads and Street Works Act) regulations.

Ability to read site plans and technical drawings.

CSCS card or equivalent certification.

Machine operation licenses (e.g., for diggers or breakers) may be required.

Site Preparation



Conduct site surveys and risk assessments.

Set up traffic management systems (cones, barriers, signage) as per NRSWA, Red book.

Mark out excavation areas according to plans.

Excavation & Groundworks



Excavate trenches manually or with machinery (e.g., mini digger, Ditch Witch and cable plough.

Locate and avoid existing utilities (gas, water, electric).

Break out surfaces (tarmac, concrete, paving).

Infrastructure Installation



Check job pack prior to attending site, check materials, tools and plant required. Ensure you are adequately equipped for the tasks for each day.

Lay telecom ducts (e.g., BT, fibre).

Install draw ropes or mandrels in ducts.

Excavate, locate and repair existing infrastructure.

Cable routes as per job pack.

Construct and install chambers (e.g., joint boxes, manholes).

Install cabinets and other telecom street furniture.

Reinstatement



Backfill trenches with appropriate materials.

Compact and level ground.

Re-lay surfaces (tarmac, slabs, concrete).

Clean and restore site to original condition.

Compliance & Reporting



Follow NRSWA and health & safety regulations.

Complete daily work logs and site reports.

Take photos for progress documentation.

Report issues or delays to supervisors.

Operate within quality and industry standards e.g. HSG47, SA006, ISIS Quality manual.

Ensure "Safe dig" process is carried out, review safe dig prints, CAT & Genny/detect existing services and mark site accordingly.
