Role Overview
As Manager of the Machine Shop team, you will represent a key role within Operations and Manufacturing. You will be responsible for a team of employees ensuring that smooth workflow is achieved utilizing labour and equipment effectively to efficiently produce a high-quality product delivered on time whilst complying to health and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Duties will include but not be limited to:
Ensure that all risk and COSHH assessments are in place and up to date and that employees are informed of, and understand, those which are relevant to their area of responsibility.
Proactively contribute to strategic decisions such as budget planning and production improvement.
Manage and provide and execute comprehensive CapEx plan.
Manage and drive the introduction of new products through teams (Production Engineering and Machine Shop). Liaise with Design Engineering, reviewing new products before they are released into production, ensuring that all designs are fit for manufacture at the most efficient cost.
Manage Production Engineers to ensure that we conduct best practice and Continuous Improvement of manufacturing methods and processes.
Ensure daily start of shift team meetings are undertaken.
Conduct toolbox talks.
Fully understand and analyse Key Performance Indicators, and their impact on the business performance and how to put improvements in place. Communicate/cascade to the team effectively.
Attend management meetings providing concise and accurate information for management reports.
Provide information for resolving issues with Project Managers, Procurement, Engineering, Sales and Manufacturing Managers.
Co-ordinate the work of the team to ensure that daily/weekly/monthly targets are achieved.
Lead and manage your department and direct reports including but not limited to, onboarding, setting targets and objectives, conducting appraisals and performance reviews to identify and support training needs.
Handle employee relations matters such as overseeing absence management with timely return-to-work interviews and leave authorisation aligned with company policy. Managing underperformance, disciplinary and capability issues, and addressing grievances, ensuring appropriate communication and collaboration with line management and HR throughout.
Identify and assess training needs for all team members, create training plan, and monitor training progress. Ensure that training matrixes are in place and up to date.
Ensure that resources are utilized and work efficiently.
Monitor time and attendance and job bookings. Identify any issues and resolve.
Ensure employees are working full shifts, starting, and finishing on time.
Ensure all equipment, machines and areas are maintained to a high standard, employing Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) for all major/critical items.
Optimise 'offline programming' to increase capacity/productivity, ensuring all CNC Programs are in place prior to release to production, using CAM software and manual programming methods.
Design jigs and fixtures using CAD (preferably 3D) for use in the Machine Shop, to ensure ease of use, consistency of manufacture and error proofing whilst following Lean principles.
Produce accurate and detailed production routes, specifying operation details, work centers and time estimates for the in-house manufacture of products.
Provide detailed manufacturing procedures.
Research, develop and implement new technologies and best practice.
Assist Assembly and Machine Shop personnel with their day-to-day production requirements by providing them with technical assistance and problem-solving solutions.
Interface with the Sales team and provide them with accurate product costs, to enable the correct sales prices to be calculated whilst maintaining profit margins.
Ensure quality targets are met and take the lead in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) events to understand cause and prevent re-occurrence. Evaluate the data for further improvements.
Compile, maintain and ensure employees understand and adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures.
Identifying areas of best practice within IMI and externally, developing relationships and sharing best practice.
Ensure the manufacturing facility is maintained to world class standards by utilising Lean manufacturing techniques.
Perform other such duties commensurate with the nature and level of the post as may be reasonably required.

Able to demonstrate a thorough understanding and experience of quality, safety, maintenance, machining, assembly, and test.
Flexible with the ability to work to deadlines and the determination to see a job through to a satisfactory conclusion.
Strong PC skills, able to use Microsoft office suite, including but not limited to Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook.
Understanding of CAD.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written (in English).
Thorough understanding of Health and safety requirements in the workplace.
Possess a sound understanding of modern (Lean) manufacturing methods and assembly techniques.
Demonstrable experience of utilising Continuous Improvement tools and techniques eg VSM, SMED, TPM, Kaizen, 5S, Error proofing, Kanban.
Conversant with Design for manufacture (DFM), Lean Manufacture Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VAVE).
