Job Purpose:



The primary purpose of this role is to undertake the professional duties of a Special Educational Needs (SEN) teacher, focusing on the education and welfare of students in line with the "Conditions of Employment of College Teachers." The role also involves contributing to the overall responsibility for the well-being and support of all students, both within the classroom, across the college, and in the wider community or external settings.

Planning, Teaching and Class Management:



To teach students with special education needs (SEN), including Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), planning effective and engaging lessons tailored to individual learner needs, enabling students to maximise their progress. Create a stimulating, supportive learning environment in which all students realise their full potential, particularly focusing on developing independent living skills and enhancing employability. Plan and structure lessons effectively, ensuring coverage of the college curriculum while incorporating personalised learning targets based on each student's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Set clear, measurable, personalised targets that build on prior attainment and are clearly linked to EHCP outcomes. Develop a range of individualised communication strategies and bespoke resources which meet the specific needs of SEN students. Encourage students to assess their own learning and progress through reflective activities and self-evaluation methods. Support students proactively in developing self-regulation strategies and independent life skills necessary for adult life. Implement training and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) effectively, regularly adapting practice based on the latest evidence-based SEN teaching methods. Be flexible and confident in adopting innovative methods of teaching specifically designed for SEN settings, differentiating clearly from mainstream education approaches. Utilise Information and Communications Technology (ICT) effectively to enhance student learning, accessibility, independence, and life skills development. Implement positive behaviour management strategies that are individually tailored to each student's needs and circumstances.

Create a simulating learning environment in which all students realise their full potential. Plan and structure lessons effectively, ensuring coverage of the curriculum. Set clear targets for student that build on prior attainment, linked to EHCP outcomes. Create a range of personalised communication strategies and resource which meet the needs of individual students Encouraging student to assess their own learning and progress. Support students in developing self-regulation strategies. Implement training & CPD effectively. Be flexible and confident in adopting new methods of teaching. Use ICT effectively to support learning and develop students' skills and independence. Carry out positive behaviour management with personalised support strategies for individual students.

Supporting Students:



Creating and updating student Independent Learning Plans (ILPs), Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs) and Individual risk assessments, including target setting linked to Education, Health and Care Plans. Assess, evaluate and record student progress and achievement through Promonitor. Assess students' progress regularly including the timely marking of work and giving feedback, both written and oral. Understand and keep up to date with student support and learning support arrangements, ensuring students have full information and making appropriate referrals. Course Management and Administration:



To work with colleagues to embed Maths and English into the vocational curriculum. To participate in student inductions and contribute to the design of induction programmes. Ensure your resources within the subject are kept up-to-date and accessible to students and other staff in liaison with the curriculum managers and the College's Learning Centre. Produce reports to provide information to parents/employers. Adhere to the departments quality assurance processes including internal verification of project briefs and the assessment of student work taken part in standardisation of grading decision meetings. Ensure all records are kept up to date, including the completion of registers, and other required documentation in a timely manner. Carry out students' questionnaires and elicit feedback on the quality of teaching and learning. Contribute to course reviews including reviews of your subject area and the setting, implementation and monitoring of action plans. Keep knowledge and skills up to date through self-study and undertake staff development and secondments relevant to professional needs. Develop industrial and employer links with other professionals within the industry to maintain personal research or professional practice in own specialist area for personal progressional development.

Course Management and Administration:



Collaborate with colleagues to embed Maths and English into vocational and independent-living curriculum, tailored specifically to support the needs and potential employment aspirations of SEN students. Actively participate in student inductions, contributing to the design and implementation of induction programmes focused on developing essential independent-living and employability skills. Ensure subject-specific resources remain current, accessible, and inclusive for SEN students, liaising effectively with curriculum managers and the College's Learning Centre to maintain high-quality learning environments. Prepare detailed and accurate reports that clearly communicate student progress, personalised achievements, and next steps to parents, carers, and employers as appropriate. Adhere rigorously to departmental quality assurance processes, including internal verification of learning targets and project briefs, the assessment of student work, and participation in standardisation meetings to assure consistency. Maintain accurate and comprehensive records, including registers and other required documentation, completed in a timely and organised manner. Regularly conduct student questionnaires and gather feedback on the quality of teaching, learning, and individual support provided, using insights to improve practices continuously. Contribute proactively to course reviews, including subject-specific reviews and participating actively in setting, implementing, and monitoring action plans to enhance SEN provision. Regularly update professional knowledge and skills through ongoing self-study, undertaking staff development opportunities and secondments relevant to the professional needs of SEN teaching. Build and maintain professional links with industry professionals, employers, and community organisations to enhance personal professional practice, support student employability outcomes, and foster meaningful community engagement.

General:



Participate in open evenings and recruitment activities to ensure that potential applicants and students receive accurate information and guidance. Attend promotional events to publicise college and faculty activities and contribute to the development, promotion and delivery of the team's marketing and recruitment strategies. Acting as a tutor as required and providing guidance and support for students within the framework of a cross-college tutorial and pastoral care system Where appropriate ensure that basic skills initial and diagnostic assessments, are undertaken and that student receive effective learning support. Attend team meetings, College and external events as required. To participate in curriculum development and new course initiatives within the faculty and wider college. Contribute to the overall quality improvement plans and key performance indicators Ensure all data is handled in line with General Data Protection Regulations. Promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and adhere and fully implement the colleges policies and procedures relating to EDI. Take appropriate responsibility to provide a secure, safe and friendly learning environment including implementation of the College's Health and Safety Policy. QUALIFICATIONS:
