Communications And Administration Officer

Burnham, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Company Overview

Burnham Parish Council serves the vibrant community of Burnham, a large village with 13,000 residents. As the first tier of local government, we are dedicated to managing local amenities and representing community interests.
Burnham Parish Council is seeking a creative and organised team player to help drive the communications of both Burnham Parish Council and Burnham Park Hall, and to support the administration of the Parish Council.

Burnham Parish Council comprises 19 councillors, around 25 full-time, part-time and zero-hours staff, and a total budget of around 1million. The council is ambitious for the future, and keen to further sharpen its communications, particularly online.

Purpose of role

This post would lead on the websites and social media for both Burnham Parish Council, and the Council's flagship asset of Burnham Park Hall, including improvements to the hall website. They would also take responsibility for Parish Council noticeboards, and for proposing and driving other new methods of communication, particularly online. In addition, they would support the parish office team with some administrative tasks, such as organising bookings for our football pitches at the George Pitcher Memorial Grounds, ordering office supplies etc, and would assist with public enquiries to the parish office.

It is anticipated that approximately two-thirds of the role would focus on communications, and one-third on administration, but this would be flexible depending on the strengths of the successful candidate and how these complement the rest of the team.

The postholder would work closely with a variety of parish office and hall staff, and would initially report directly to the Parish Clerk.

The postholder must have a strong understanding of communications in the modern world, especially online. They must combine creativity with attention to detail, and work well both independently and as part of a team.

A full job description and person specification is enclosed with this advertisement / available on the Burnham Parish Council website.

Working conditions

The post is based at Burnham Park Hall, set within the beautiful Burnham Park area, with occasional work 'out and about' in Burnham to update Parish noticeboards. It is not anticipated that regular evening or weekend working would be required, although there may be occasional exceptions for special events.

22 hours per week is equivalent to three days per week, but the timing is negotiable and the role could be spread over three, four or five days per week.

There is potential for the role to expand, depending on the skills and experience of the candidate and the ongoing needs of the council.

The post will be employed under the model contract agreed by the National Association of Local Councils and the Society of Local Council Clerks. This includes:

Pensions scheme currently with a 6% employer contribution, under consideration for an increase. 24 days annual leave plus bank holidays, raising to 28 after five years' service. Employee Assistance Programme. A supportive system for sickness and other absence. A positive and generous approach to staff welfare and to continuing professional development. The post is permanent, subject to successful completion of a six-month probationary period.
