Hajar Press is an independent and proudly political publishing house run by and for people of colour. We publish creatively ambitious and politically engaged literature by writers of colour, with a special focus on experimental writing.
We are seeking a
Community Coordinator
to develop and lead our community-building work. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of Hajar's mission and a mix of project management, curatorial and group facilitation skills. This is an exciting opportunity to organise events and partnerships that bring people together to imagine and build another world.
Important note: Hajar is currently run by just two people: one full-time Director and one part-time Sales Coordinator. We are looking for someone who will be able to commit to this role as part of our very small, dedicated team. We therefore request that you carefully and honestly consider your capacity to take on the role before applying.
Key Responsibilities
1. Leading on events programming and partnerships:
Organising book launches, including liaising with venues and speakers.
Developing and facilitating workshops, reading groups and other community events.
Building partnerships with aligned organisations to co-host events and collaborate on political and creative initiatives.
2. Assisting with marketing and promotion:
Promoting books and events through social media, newsletters and the Hajar website.
Creating promotional materials (using Canva templates).
Recording and sharing a living archive of events through videos and photos.
Reposting content relevant to Hajar's community and political mission.
3. Contributing to collective decision-making:
Participating in team discussions about Hajar's publishing programme.
Person Specification
Strong commitment to and understanding of Hajar's mission as an anti-racist, anti-oppressive publisher.
Excellent organisational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to lead a group.
Strong curatorial and programme development skills, with the ability to connect ideas and themes across events.
Demonstrable paid or unpaid experience in facilitation and community engagement (for example, this may include political organising, hosting a book club, volunteering at a community centre, delivering workshops).
Ability to work proactively, independently and flexibly.
Proficient in social media management for audience engagement.
Familiarity with Canva and Mailchimp is desirable but not essential.
