Overview


We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Community Engagement Specialist to join our team. This role is pivotal in fostering relationships within the community, promoting public health initiatives, and driving engagement through various outreach programmes. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, project management experience, and a background in community building, Peer support, marketing or fundraising. You will work collaboratively with stakeholders to enhance community participation and support our mission. Lived experience as an Afro-Caribbean or Mixed Heritage parent and/or strong understanding and passion for reducing the health and social inequalities these communities face is key. In addition to an understanding of human rights, casual, overt and systemic racism and how they affect the health and outcomes for ethnically diverse people, especially in the perinatal period and the cultural dynamics that may be at play within these communities.

Responsibilities



Develop and implement community engagement strategies that align with organisational goals. Supervise and mentor team members involved in outreach efforts, ensuring effective collaboration and communication. Manage projects from inception to completion, including planning, execution, and evaluation of community initiatives. Lead fundraising campaigns and marketing efforts to promote programmes and increase community involvement. Utilise social media platforms to engage with the community, share updates, and promote events. Confidence to represent B3 at statutory, professional, or community meetings, clearly communicating our mission, values, and community insights. Conduct workshops and presentations to educate the public on health-related topics and available resources. Maintain accurate records of community interactions and programme outcomes for reporting purposes. Collaborate with local organisations and stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and enhance service delivery.

Experience



Experience (professional or volunteer) working with families or communities, ideally in support, outreach, advocacy, or coordination roles. Strong community engagement skills, with the ability to build trust, nurture relationships, and connect with people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.. Excellent interpersonal skills--warm, approachable, inclusive, and a good listener who can engage respectfully with people in vulnerable situations. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create clear reports, presentations, and community updates. Commitment to racial justice and health equity, with awareness of the systemic barriers facing Black and mixed-heritage communities. Adaptability and problem-solving skills--comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment and responding flexibly to community needs. Ability to work independently and as part of a small team, with initiative and accountability. Basic monitoring and evaluation skills, such as collecting feedback, capturing impact stories, and recording community engagement data.

Freelance/Contractor Basis


This role is offered on a freelance/independent contractor basis. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing their own tax, National Insurance contributions, and pension arrangements. As this is not an employed position, entitlement to holiday pay, sick pay, or automatic enrolment into a workplace pension scheme does not apply.

A car driver, with clean license and regular access to a vehicle is required and a DBS check

Physical outreach work within the community of Thurrock is also required
