Purpose

Contributes to the overall success of the GBMT Europe Compliance team in the UK and Ireland ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team\'s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

Accountabilities

  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Responsible for providing advice and support to Scotiabank\'s Global Banking & Markets and Treasury units in the UK and Ireland, including relevant functions, to provide reasonable assurance that:
  • The firm and its employees comply with applicable regulatory requirements and internal policies and procedures.
  • The risk of reputational damage, regulatory sanction and discipline, client complaints and civil litigation is minimized.
  • Actual and potential compliance violations and risk situations are proactively identified, investigated and resolved or escalated in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Understand how the Bank\'s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions
  • Participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of appropriate compliance policies and procedures, provide sound regulatory advice, partner with the business lines and take a proactive role in driving forward new business initiatives.
  • Work with the wider Compliance team in implementing any regulatory change initiatives or projects that affect the businesses.
Accountabilities

Advisory
  • Assist with compliance advisory duties relating to Scotiabank\'s Global Banking & Markets and Treasury (GBMT) businesses in the UK and Europe comprising Equities, Fixed Income & Currencies, Commodities, Treasury, Corporate Banking & Investment Banking, Global Business Payments, (collectively, \xe2\x80\x9cGBMT Europe\xe2\x80\x9d), including certain functions that support GBMT Europe (\xe2\x80\x9cBusiness Support Functions\xe2\x80\x9d).
  • Assist with ad-hoc business / regulatory initiatives and other projects in which GBMT Europe Compliance is a stakeholder.
  • Prepare the weekly Advisory newsletter
  • Responsible for maintaining advisory logs and preparing management information for submission to Governance Committees
Regulatory Reporting
  • Responsible for submitting regulatory disclosures under Takeover Panel Reporting, EU Short Selling, Transparency Directive TR1 - Major Shareholding and Issuer Requests.
Regulatory Change
  • Assist with addressing the impact of regulatory developments across GBMT Europe through change management programs in conjunction with other stakeholders (such as the Business and Regulatory Initiatives Group) to facilitate effective implementation.
  • Provide support within Compliance on the update or development of relevant policies, procedures and other documentation in response to regulatory change.
Regulatory
  • Contribute to internal databases as required, such as the global issues management system and regulatory libraries.
  • Undertake basic data analysis in connection with the compliance risk and controls assessment process, local training needs assessments, and other relevant processes.
  • Act as the regional co-ordinator for complaints in accordance with GBMT requirements.
Policies, Procedures and Controls
  • Support with the implementation and maintenance of compliance policies, procedures, plans, and other documentation.
  • Co-ordinate the review, approval, and submissions of policies that are owned or sponsored by Europe Advisory Compliance to ensure adherence to the GBMT Europe Compliance Policy review procedure.
  • Drafting document development plans and checklists as part of the policy renewal process.
  • Maintenance of the Europe Advisory Compliance procedures
Reporting
  • Responsible for the production of management information relating to Europe Advisory Compliance, and co-ordination of other internal reporting within GBMT Europe Compliance.
Training
  • Assist in the creation and delivery of appropriate compliance training (and other awareness communications) to GBMT Europe and Business Support Functions in conjunction with colleagues in GBMT Europe Compliance and Group Compliance.
  • Maintenance and submission of local / regional training records to the central GBMT co-ordinator.
  • Ensure adequate training is undertaken to continue professional development and maintenance of the requisite skills and expertise to undertake their role.
General
  • Provide relevant input into the formulation of new processes or systems to implement compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Administrative support to Europe Compliance as required, such as the recording of relevant queries and advice within the team database.
  • Responsible for tracking audit and testing issues relevant to Europe Compliance, including progress updates, until their closure.

  • Maintain compliance knowledge through appropriate training and monitoring of emerging regulatory, legal and Group initiatives and requirements.
  • Assist with ad hoc tasks and projects within GBMT Europe Compliance.
Education/Experience

Key Skills
  • Degree educated or equivalent (law degree preferred).
  • Proven compliance experience in a financial institution is advantageous but not essential.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of securities/banking rules, regulations, by-laws, policies and procedures.
  • Administrative and time management skills to meet various deadlines
  • Experience of multiple stakeholder interaction, including internal as well as external stakeholders.
