Job Description

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Anaesthetist. This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs). The post will be supporting the ongoing expansion of surgical, critical care, pain management, perioperative medicine & acute oncology services at The Christie.



To contribute to the provision of anaesthesia across a range of oncological specialties held at The Christie. The post holder will do sessions in anaesthesia for oncological surgery, radiotherapy & dependent on the successful candidate's interests, there is also an opportunity to undertake sessions in proton therapy to help support the general anaesthestic service to our paediatric patients. An overview of the 10 PA job plan, there is a split of 7.5PA for Direct Clinical Care(DCC) & 2.5PA for Supporting Programmed Activities(SPA), allocated according to the job plan. On appointment, the successful candidate will review & agree a job plan with the Clinical Director for Anaesthesia & Critical Care, in collaboration with the Directorate Operations Manager for the department consultant's individual needs & specialist interests are supported & encouraged, whilst also ensuring our services are fully supported. The department of Anaesthesia & Critical Care is dynamic & rapidly expanding which offers further opportunities for the successful candidate to develop in the future. This post is complemented by 25 other consultants, eight of which contribute to critical care cover.



There are nine resident specialty doctors covering OCCU, supported by two specialist trainees in acute medicine or internal Medicine, one clinical fellow and an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP).



The post holder will share with the other consultants the responsibility for the continuity of care of patients treated at The Christie. The successful candidate will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share administrative duties with consultant colleagues.



Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the successful candidate is expected to follow division's agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with health care professionals on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.



The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and royal colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.



Job Planning

The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job Plans are prospectively agreed subject to an annual individual job plan review (May - September). It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust and then be aligned to the Trusts annual Job Planning review cycle.



The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any educational and supervision components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future. Essential Training/Mandatory Training

To ensure you maintain safe practice and understand Trust requirements, you must ensure your essential/mandatory training modules are maintained at all times using allocated core SPA time to complete them.



Job Plan Timetable

The timetable below is indicative and will be confirmed on commencement in post. Our current rota cycle runs in an 8-week recurring pattern.

It is the requirement of the Trust that all new consultant colleagues must have 0.25 SPAs within their job plan to support Trust appraisal and supervision requirements. This can either be as appraiser or a supervisor for medical staff or Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACP).

On call Commitments



This role requires participation in an on-call commitment for the oncological critical care. This is currently a 1:8 rota, and attracts a 2.2 PA allocation and 5% on-call supplement. There is a separate theatre on-call rota for emergency surgery.



Health and Wellbeing

The Trust provides supplementary health and wellbeing support for all staff under the umbrella title of 'Looking After You'. This includes an Employee Assistance Programme that provides counselling and other support; an annual programme of wellbeing and recognition events; access to The Christie Library, the Spiritual Care Team, Schwartz Rounds and staff networks; and services and initiatives that respond to emerging needs, concerns and trends.



All new consultants are also enrolled onto a Leadership and Development programme to help support their transition to working as a consultant within the trust. Within the department, new consultants also undergo a period of supernumerary shadowing prior to undergoing solo work in theatres and critical care. There is also regular access to a clinical support anaesthetist, whose responsibility includes providing support for clinical decision making for elective and emergency situations, as well as ensuring consultants get regular breaks in theatres.



As a small, friendly and approachable department, informal peer support is also available and encouraged, both in and outside of normal working hours. We also have a social and wellbeing lead, who regularly organises social events throughout the calendar year.
