Job Description

The multidisciplinary Pain Management Team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust enjoy good relationships with the Community Pain service and provides secondary care services on the Wrightington and Leigh sites.



The successful applicant would be joining a dynamic team of 6 consultants, one associate specialist, 2 specialist nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists and pain physiotherapists.



Image intensifier and ultrasound guided pain interventions including radiofrequency ablation techniques are carried out in a dedicated treatment room with recovery on the adjoining ward by enthusiastic and experienced ward staff. A small office is adjacent to the treatment room for full IT administrative support.



The Chronic Pain Team supports the Tertiary Referral Orthopaedic Hospital at Wrightington with a.o. procedures for post-surgical/neuropathic pain or genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation for arthritic knee pain.



We provide a nurse led self-acupuncture service, Qutenza services, Botox for chronic migraines and Consultant Oral ketamine.



There are regular Pain Management Programmes, Psychology and OT and Physiotherapy sessions.



There is a full triage of all patients to direct supportive and treatment measures. There are regular scheduled full team clinical governments meeting.

Acute care is provided at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. This includes adults' and children's accident and emergency services, intensive care, women's and children's and a range of medical and surgical specialities. Wrightington Hospital is an elective Orthopaedic Specialist site and our Leigh Day Case unit is currently expanding its portfolio and increasing activity. The successful candidate will have a job plan developed to accommodate their special interests whilst also meeting the service requirements of the trust.

On-Call



Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

Be expected to supervise and train SAS Doctors and Doctors in Training



Adhere and promote Trust policies, procedures and guidelines and maintain the Professional Code of Conduct



Ensure compliance with the Mandatory training policy in accordance with the Trust policy.

Responsibility for Health & Safety



Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 - the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.



Responsibility for Teaching



The Department is committed to delivering a high quality, safe service. The ICU enjoys full Accreditation with the Intercollegiate Board for Training in Intensive Care Medicine. There is a new post-graduate and skills centre on the Wigan site. There are regular educational meetings on two sites (Wigan and Wrightington). There will be opportunities to become involved with Simulation Training.



Work Circumstances & on-call



A mutually acceptable Job Plan will be agreed on appointment to the post. The successful candidate will undergo annual appraisal and five yearly re validations. The Trust and the Department of Anaesthesia are committed to supporting doctors through appraisal and re validation.
