Main duties of the job
Consultants provide support for the diagnosis and management of infection. This can include, but is not limited to, advice on investigations, interpretation of results, antimicrobial prescribing, developing formulary and clinical guidelines. This is delivered by clinical consults, ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs), and telephone/electronic advice.
Integrated working between clinical infection specialists (encompassing microbiologists, ID physicians, virologists, IPC nurses and clinical scientists) is recognised as being a key to the development of a high-quality Infection Service optimising infection diagnosis and management, and it is expected that this will play a significant role in the shape of the departments in the future. Cross-site working across the Trust sites is currently undertaken by consultants.
The post holder is expected to perform clinical and/or educational supervision of specialty trainees in the department.
The Job Plan will comprise ten programmed activities (PA). 8.5 PA will be direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 PA will be supporting PA (SPA). Each consultant will have a formal job plan approved by the Division which will be reviewed in line with the consultant job planning procedure. Post holders are also expected to participate in a recognised scheme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Study leave and expenses will be awarded to support reasonable requests for CPD activities.
