Main duties of the job
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a substantive Consultant in Paediatric and Perinatal Pathology.
This is a new and exciting post which will contribute to the established and experienced paediatric pathology reporting team. The service covers the local Southampton population and regional referrals from around Wessex.
The role combines both surgical pathology and the delivery of the paediatric post-mortem service. This will include reporting of histology specimens (biopsies, resections, including placental pathology), performing/supervising macroscopic dissection, attendance at multidisciplinary team meetings, frozen section service provision and delivery of the paediatric post-mortem service.
As a large regional training centre, there will be involvement in post graduate teaching and training of resident doctors. Strong links with University of Southampton will also provide opportunities to be involved in undergraduate teaching.

Job responsibilities
Responsibilities:

  • The direct clinical care activities principally include microscopic reporting, macroscopic specimen dissection, multidisciplinary team meetings, frozen section cover, reporting with trainees and provision of the paediatric postmortem service.
  • Microscopic reporting is performed via light microscopy, digital pathology (UKAS ISO15189 2022 accredited) or a combination of these. Once digitally validated, some proportion of work can be delivered remotely.
  • You will contribute to the postmortem service. Whilst it is expected that the successful appointee to this post will contribute to paediatric hospital postmortem work, any contribution to the coroners autopsy workload is not obligatory.
  • Teaching and training: This includes supervision during DCC activities on a rotational basis and provision of dedicated teaching/training sessions. There is also the opportunity for undergraduate teaching in conjunction with the University of Southampton and involvement with teaching/training of specialist reporting/scientific dissection biomedical scientists.
Essential experience/skills required:
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • FRCPath (or equivalent) qualification in paediatric and perinatal pathology
  • Experience in paediatric and perinatal pathology
  • Experience of working within the NHS
  • Ability to travel between hospital sites or for necessary patient visits
