Job Description

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is a large teaching hospital providing acute general services to Southampton and southern Hampshire and specialist regional services, including complex neurology and neurosurgery, to central southern England.

We wish to appoint two energetic and committed colleagues as Consultants in Stroke Medicine.

These are new posts, either whole time or part time to complement our existing team of five stroke physicians and one stroke neurologist.

Our stroke service is well established and high quality, recently achieving very good SSNAP results. Our hyper-acute services are based within the Neurosciences Centre. We benefit from strong links with neuro-radiology and intensive care. The neurology service assists with out of hours thrombolysis.

We are an innovative and ambitious service. We have an 8am to 8pm, 7 day per week consultant-led service working with a team of stroke nurse practitioners who take our initial referrals. There are 11 consultants on the on call rota, and with a planned expansion in the service, we are aiming to extend thrombectomy to provide 24/7 cover

We have treated 145 patients with mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in 2022, and performed the 6th highest number of thrombectomies out of UK centres. We have 5 interventional neuroradiologists and support referrals from 7 district general hospitals across the Wessex region. This is offered 12 hours a day 7 days a week, with a view to extending into the evenings and eventually overnight.

We have a strong emphasis on education for stroke service staff and for medical students, as well as postgraduate medical education for our junior doctors. We have a strong reputation for stroke research and are an NIHR Hyperacute Stroke Research Centre and recruit into thrombectomy, thrombolysis and secondary prevention stroke trials.

This post affords the opportunity to join an excellent stroke service that embraces new ways working as we expand our regional MT service. We are looking for colleagues who will complement our direction of travel.

Applicants should have a CCT or be on the GMC\'s Specialist Register in Neurology or in General (internal) and Geriatric medicine. We would be particularly interested to hear from applicants who have a specialist stroke qualification (e.g. a stroke fellowship) and/or who have experience in mechanical thrombectomy for acute stroke care. Applicants who are within six months of obtaining their CCT on the date of the interview may also apply.

Should you wish to discuss the post further please contact Dr Richard Marigold, Consultant Stroke Physician and Clinical Lead for Stroke via Tracy Aspin, Tel: 02381 205019
