Consultant Stroke Physician

Somerset, United Kingdom

Job Description

Contract: Substantive / Full-time or part-time / Flexible working encouraged
Are you ready to shape the future of stroke care in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK? Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is excited to invite applications for Consultant Stroke Physicians to join our growing, passionate, and innovative stroke team.
This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to an ambitious and well-supported transformation of Somerset's stroke services, including the launch of a brand-new Somerset-wide Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Musgrove Park Hospital in 2026. You'll work alongside a collaborative team of 6 consultants and 4 specialist doctors, with strong support from specialist nurses, ACPs, therapists, and a progressive management structure.
Our stroke service delivers:

  • 24/7 thrombolysis with support from the AGWS stroke telemedicine network, and access to thrombectomy at Bristol Southmead Hospital
  • Daily HASU and weekday ASU consultant-led ward rounds
  • 7-day TIA clinics and comprehensive outpatient services
  • Dedicated stroke rehabilitation units and an award-winning Early Supported Discharge (ESD) service
  • A broad research portfolio with support from stroke research nurses
This is more than a job-it's your chance to join a service with the ambition to deliver top-tier outcomes in the SSNAP audit and help shape future services in an integrated, forward-thinking Trust. Our vision is underpinned by investment: refurbishment of HASU and ASU estates, and a new MRI and CT-perfusion service aligned to GIRFT recommendations.
We welcome applicants with energy, ideas, and a passion for patient-centred stroke care. You'll be supported with a clear job plan (10 PAs, with 1.5 SPAs), mentoring, and opportunities in education, quality improvement and leadership. Flexibility, part-time working, and those new to consultant posts (or approaching CCT) are warmly welcomed.
