Overview
We are seeking an experienced and commercially focused Contract Manager to lead our long-term strategic partnerships with key customers. The role will have oversight of all interactions, deliverables and contractual changes with a customer, and will involve close liaison with operations, finance, transactions and legal.
This role blends relationship leadership with strong commercial acumen, ensuring contracts deliver value for all parties while deepening trust, long-term relationships and collaboration.
You will be the primary point of contact for assigned customers, overseeing the full relationship lifecycle from implementation through to ongoing performance, governance, continuous improvement. Success in this role means our customers view MEL as a long-term, solution-oriented partner that delivers operational excellence and commercial confidence in equal measure.
This role is based with our team in Birmingham, however, there may be flexibility to consider other locations.
Key Responsibilities
Relationship & Partnership Management
Act as the primary relationship owner for assigned customers, building trusted, long-term partnerships.
Lead contract discussions collaboratively with customers, ensuring outcomes align with shared objectives.
Understand customers' strategic priorities and translate these into mutually beneficial contract outcomes.
Ensure MEL's commercial and operational interests are protected through effective contract oversight and trusted communication.
Facilitate regular engagement forums, performance reviews and forward-planning discussions.
Champion the customer within MEL, ensuring internal teams understand commitments and expectations.
Commercial & Contract Leadership
Manage re-negotiations and contract changes in partnership with customers and MEL's transactions, legal, finance and operations teams.
Ensure agreements are commercially robust and operationally deliverable while maintaining a collaborative tone in discussions.
Manage contract implementation and change control, ensuring all obligations and dependencies are tracked and met.
Identify opportunities to enhance value through improved processes, data quality and service delivery.
Teamworking Collaboration & Internal Alignment
Work cross-functionally with Operations, Transactions, Finance, Data and Legal to deliver seamless service.
Provide clear guidance and interpretation of contract terms for internal stakeholders.
Support business-wide projects that strengthen MEL's customer engagement model.
Planning & Reporting
Work with the Transactions team to plan contract implementation.
Prioritise customer engagement plans to balance proactive relationship management with contractual rigour.
Plan and report on key relationship and contract milestones to support MEL's governance processes.
Produce accurate, timely reporting to inform MEL's governance and investment decisions.
Key Capabilities and Experience
Experience of working in a commercial or customer-facing environment.
Ability to develop and use relationships effectively to deliver successful outcomes
Communication skills to bridge customer and internal teams with clarity and empathy.
Strong working knowledge of commercial contract principles & terms.
Excellent negotiation & influencing skills with the ability to operate with impact at different organisational levels.
Proven ability to frame & successfully manage contract negotiations, influence relevant stakeholders & develop positive working relationships.
Evidence of commercial acumen and understanding of how the business environment impacts your role, with the ability to use these insights to plan successful outcomes.
Ability to understand our customers and anticipate their requirements.
High level of literacy to clearly present information in commercial documents and customer communications.
Ability to break down complex industry issues and identify solutions to meet customer and MEL requirements.
Motivated and resilient, with the energy to meet challenges head-on.
Numerate and analytical with ability to understand information quickly and accurately.
Evidence of facilitating continuous improvement.
IT literate with Microsoft Office skills.
Ability to travel throughout the UK to meet with clients.
