We're a national law firm with a local reach. Our legal experts are here for you. Whether it's personal or business, we understand that everyone's situation is different. But we're more than just a law firm - we're a team of people working together to help individuals and businesses navigate life's ups and downs. Your Role and What You'll Be Doing

We're looking for a highly experienced Costs Lawyer / Draftsman to join our Costs Budgeting team here at Irwin Mitchell.

In this role, you'll play a pivotal part in managing budgets across multiple areas of the business. You'll work closely with fee earners to create tailored cost budgets and estimates for ongoing litigation matters, including disbursements such as medical records, translation services, and expert reports, ensuring strategic foresight across our legal teams. This is a highly specialised position, ideal for someone with a strong background in legal costs work, and particularly well-suited to individuals who thrive in a dynamic environment.

What You'll Be Doing

Producing bespoke costs budgets for a wide range of cases, often complex in nature. Working post-issue through to case management conclusion, tracking and estimating future litigation spend. Collaborating with fee earners to align on financial strategy and ensure compliance with filing dates and procedural requirements. Advising across the business on budgeting requirements and processes. Liaising with courts and external parties on budget estimates and costs discussions. Advocate where appropriate - this is a development opportunity for those interested in expanding their advocacy experience.

About You

About You

Experience in costs budgeting, ideally in a similar, senior-level role. Previous file handling experience would be beneficial. Confident communicator, able to collaborate effectively with legal teams and stakeholders under time pressure. Comfortable managing multiple cases at once and adapting quickly to last-minute instructions. Advocacy experience is a plus, but not essential - a great opportunity for those looking to gain exposure in this area.

Our Benefits - What We Can Offer You

25 days holidays as standard plus bank holidays - You can 'buy' up to 35hrs of extra holiday too. Generous and flexible pension schemes. Volunteering days - Two days of volunteering every year for a cause of your choice (fully paid) Westfield Health membership, offering refunds on medical services alongside our Aviva Digital GP services.

We also offer a wide range of well-being initiatives to encourage positive mental health both in and out of the workplace and to make sure you're fully supported. This includes our Flexible by Choice programme which gives our colleagues more choice over a hybrid way of working subject to role, team and client requirements.

We have been ranked in the Best Workplaces for Wellbeing for Large Organisations for 2024!

Our responsible business programmes are fundamental to who we are and our purpose. We're committed to being a diverse and inclusive workplace where our colleagues can flourish, and we have established a number of inclusion network groups across our business to support this aim.

Our commitment to Social Responsibility, community investment activity and tackling climate change is a fundamental part of who we are. It's made up of four strands: Our People, Our Community, Our Environment and Our Pro Bono.
