Diamond Light Source is one of the world's most advanced scientific facilities. We're home to the UK's synchrotron light source - a giant microscope producing beams of light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. Probing the structure and composition of matter, our work drives innovation in everything from vaccines to nanotech.
At Diamond we are currently undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.
About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Data Analysis Scientist to join our Imaging Team to help drive beamline scientific output by working closely with beamline scientists to improve data processing and interpretation capabilities and to develop and introduce new methods also working closely with the experienced software scientists and engineers of the Data Analysis Group. This role will allow you to develop and further hone your expertise within an internationally renowned multidisciplinary environment driven by the pursuit of scientific excellence.
Electron and X-ray diffractive imaging techniques, such as ptychography, can be used to explore the properties of complex materials with high spatial resolution. The development and application of these techniques is growing rapidly and to drive this forward at Diamond we are seeking to improve the experimental and computational workflow (assisting with data processing and interpretation, rapid-computation and real-time feedback) and to develop new methods to address current scientific needs.
This role will be to develop new computational methods, user interfaces and solutions for live data processing and visualisation to improve the experience of our users and assist them in getting the best of their data.
About You
You will hold an appropriate First Degree or equivalent and a relevant Postgraduate degree (or ability to demonstrate significant relevant experience).
As well as practical experience in following areas:
Modern programming languages such as Java, C++ and Python.
Professional, scientific or technical field.
With a background in using advanced mathematics and software engineering techniques for application development.
Desirable but not essential experience of GPU or HPC code development and data management, describing data and exploiting databases for scientific work would be an advantage. Knowledge of ptychography or related diffraction imaging techniques is desirable and basic experience with modern web technologies (React/Typescript) and cloud infrastructure (Kubernetes) are considered a bonus.
