Your role in the team

The Enterprise Economics & Risk Analysis (EERA) team is a cross-functional team operating at the heart of decision-making at Allstate. The team quantifies and optimizes risk and return for Allstate leveraging a comprehensive economic capital model. EERA is led by the Chief Economist and has team members in USA, UK, and India. The team reports to the Chief Risk Officer and provides advice directly to the CEO, Senior Leadership Team and the Board of Directors.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Economic Capital branch of EERA to support economic capital decision-making and business-wide risk analysis. Responsibilities will include development of new analytical tools to make better strategic decisions and enhancements to existing tools and processes in the team.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to)

  • Developing data infrastructure projects & proof of concept business solutions for users of the economic capital model
  • Working directly with data scientists, risk analysts and economists on needs and tactical solutions
  • Executing new data engineering work tracks for the economic capital model and analytics from inception and prototyping to fully developed solutions
  • Leading/assisting in developing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes with highly dynamic data (I.e., constantly changing definitions, formatting, multitude of potential errors & revisions, etc.)
  • Leading/assisting in migration from local development to analytical servers and/or cloud-based environments
  • Exploring options for optimization runtime performance of code including incorporating concurrency, rewriting portions of code in a higher performance language than python, general enhancements of existing code performance by incorporating more efficient algorithms, adding caching, etc.
  • Potentially setting up CI/CD pipelines, assist with hosting REST APIs, etc.
  • Potentially leading pulling more difficult to obtain Allstate internal data as well as external data
  • Providing support on requirement development for analytic data sources, breaking down business problems into solvable components and assisting with documenting requirements with minimal supervision
  • Executing rapid development of new data and analytic work tracks with fast iteration over quick sprints
  • Building test scripts, executing testing, working with data scientists and business to ensure end user acceptance
  • Leveraging agile data analysis with technology fluency in programming, software/programming languages and technologies (i.e. SQL, Python, Github Actions, Spark, Kafka, Scala and Hadoop), paired with a high degree of analytic agility to be able to meet fluid and dynamic business needs in this space
  • Participating in the development of enterprise data assets, information platforms or data spaces designed for exploring and understanding the data
  • Participating in the development of new concepts, proof of concept designs, and prototypes for business or research data solutions so that business users may visually understand and explore a new feature or functionality before implementation to expose design assumptions and drive ideation
  • Mentoring other team members in a business technical environment and promote an environment that supports innovation and process improvement
So, what are the essential criteria to apply?
  • All candidates must evidence an existing right to work in the UK\'
  • Must have achieved a degree in computer science, software or computer engineering or information technology to the level of:
  • 2.1 degree classification or equivalent with at least one year of experience in Python
  • A quantitative PhD with proven experience in Python
  • Database development knowledge and experience (i.e. SQL)
We also have some desirable criteria
  • Must have achieved a degree in computer science, software or computer engineering information technology or data analytics to the level of:
  • First Class/Distinction degree classification or equivalent with at least one year of experience in Python
  • Knowledge of: Git/Github, R, Java, Power BI, C++, Rust, Go, Spark, PowerPoint
  • Understanding of financial markets, insurance, financial modeling, and GAAP/STAT accounting for insurance companies
  • An ability to communicate complex ideas and analysis into practical terms for non-experts
