Data Engineering Manager

Oxford/Hybrid

As a leader in the field, they are seeking a talented and experienced Data Platform Engineering Manager to join our team. Responsibilities: As the Data Platform Engineering Manager, you will have a pivotal role in ensuring the successful delivery of our engineering roadmap. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading one or more multi-disciplinary teams in the development of our highly secure and scalable Data Platform and Data Lake.
  • Taking ownership of delivering the engineering roadmap for the team, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of projects.
  • Planning and negotiating with peers to meet delivery commitments and managing expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrating sound engineering principles by actively contributing toward your team\'s goals.
  • Leading the scoping of projects, features, and tasks within the team, ensuring efficient resource allocation and prioritization.
  • Identifying technical debt and working closely with the Product Manager to balance it with feature work using cost/benefit analysis to make informed decisions.
  • Coaching and developing team members\' skills in line with business needs, fostering a culture of growth and excellence.
  • Communicating expectations clearly to team members through regular one-on-ones, objective setting, and effective feedback mechanisms.
  • Managing a capable team and utilizing your interpersonal skills to foster collaboration, engagement, and success.
Collaboration and Teamwork: In this role, you will work closely with various stakeholders, including:
  • Product Owner: Collaborate to understand priorities and requirements, ensuring alignment between engineering and product development.
  • QA Lead: Ensure a high level of quality and consistency with our quality practices and processes.
  • Platform Engineering Manager: Ensure the data stack runs on our highly secure infrastructure.
  • Agile Delivery Lead: Drive consistency in our Agile ways of working, promoting efficient and effective delivery.
  • Operations Teams: Collaborate to ensure observability, disaster recovery, and high levels of reliability.
Qualifications and Skills: To excel in this role, you should possess the following qualifications and skills:
  • AWS experience
  • Strong leadership experience, preferably in a data engineering or related field.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in building highly secure and scalable Data Platforms and Data Lakes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate multi-disciplinary teams, driving successful project delivery.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to set and manage expectations with stakeholders at various levels.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, ensuring high-quality engineering practices.
  • Proven experience in identifying and managing technical debt, making informed decisions based on cost/benefit analysis.
  • A passion for coaching and developing team members, supporting their professional growth and aligning their skills with business needs.
  • Collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals.
  • Previous experience working in an Agile environment is highly desirable.
