Data Scientist

Birmingham - Bristol Area, United Kingdom

Job Description

Candidate Specification

Beyond your primary areas of expertise within Data Science and Engineering, there will also be ample opportunity to develop the well-rounded skill sets needed to successfully develop and deploy solutions in a commercial context, managing the associated risks and yielding the best outcomes for our clients and our people.

What you will bring to the role:

  • Creative problem-solving ability
  • Genuinely collaborative attitude and approach
  • Demonstrable ability in Data Science (deep learning and time series analyses) and Software Development (python)
  • Drive and enthusiasm to solve problems, improve society, make a difference
  • Experience (academic or otherwise) within other relevant technical disciplines such as civil engineering, asset management, environmental is by no means essential but would be of interest.
We are actively recruiting a diverse workforce that is reflective of the communities we serve. We recognise that differences in ability, skills and experience are a strength and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds.

Do you want to work for a company whose purpose is to improve society by considering social outcomes, and to transform businesses, communities, and opportunities for its employees?

Our Intelligent Data Analytics team develops and deploys compelling new solutions to some of the most challenging problems within engineering and asset management.

The team embodies Mott MacDonald\'s Domain x Digital capability with data scientists, developers, civil engineers, asset management specialists, and environmentalists working as a single, cohesive unit.

The role offers access to the most demanding and exciting real-world problems. You will use your data science knowledge and problem-solving abilities to make a significant, positive and visible difference to society.

We draw on Mott MacDonald\'s long-standing and trusted relationships with many clients to develop a deep understanding of each of the challenges they face. We use a rapidly expanding vocabulary of cutting-edge data science techniques alongside unparalleled technical domain knowledge to create transformational solutions. This approach has allowed us to rapidly develop and deploy new solutions and reliably scale them across the industry.

A typical example is the award winning Moata Ash Dieback system. This was developed over an 18-month period and is now in use by Local Authorities across the UK to manage a problem that is estimated will cost the UK economy over \xc2\xa315 billion. We created a stereo vision survey system together with a powerful computer vision processing pipeline to automatically identify ash trees and measure their health, height, and fall risk. Obtaining this data conventionally would have required extensive ground surveys with associated traffic management. It is now gathered by vehicles at traffic speed and can capture ash health over entire networks in a matter of days. In addition to making the information available to Authorities for the first time at this scale, allowing them to manage the risks posed by tree and branch fall, the data being generated by the system offers unprecedented insights that will be used to manage the problem at a strategic level.

We want you to succeed in your career aims and will actively support you in doing so, whether that entails exposure to many different areas of expertise or specialism within certain disciplines. We will also ask you to guide and mentor colleagues within the team and will give you the necessary time and support to do this.

Although we work closely together, our team spans multiple offices across Europe and beyond. We work virtually and come together periodically to collaborate in-person. This approach enables us to bring together the most capable people irrespective of location.

We also continually work with teams from across Mott MacDonald and with our data science community, sharing and building on our collective capabilities.

You will be a part of team that is dedicated to leveraging AI and data science to contribute to a more sustainable future. You will work directly with the IDA Data Science Lead and will be assigned a level of responsibility and autonomy that enables the rapid prototyping and proving of solutions.

Exposure to a range of cutting-edge technologies and platforms is a certainty. These include among others:
  • Deep Learning Frameworks: PyTorch, TensorFlow
  • Machine Learning Algorithms: Yolov5, MaskRCNN, EfficientNET, Random Forest, XGBoost, Linear Regressors
  • Databases: SQL and NoSQL (e.g. MongoDB or graph databases)
  • Cloud Computing Platforms: Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure
  • MLOps Practices: Git, Docker, CI/CD pipelines
  • Programming Languages: Python, Javascript or C++
