JOB PURPOSE
The Data Steward plays a central role in ensuring the quality, consistency, and integrity of enterprise data assets. Working closely with business stakeholders, data governance, data quality, and technical teams, the Data Steward supports the definition and enforcement of data standards, manages critical metadata, and acts as a key point of contact for data-related queries. This individual helps embed a culture of data accountability and quality across the organisation, ensuring that data is fit for purpose and aligned with Burberry Forward strategy.
RESPONSIBILITIES

• Data Standards and Definitions: Collaborate with business and data governance teams to define data standards, naming conventions, and business definitions for critical data elements.
• Metadata Management: Ensure the accurate capture and maintenance of business metadata in the enterprise data catalogue (e.g., Alation), supporting data discovery and lineage.
• Data Quality Monitoring: Identify, document, and track data quality issues. Support root cause analysis and resolution processes in collaboration with data owners and technical teams.
• Issue Resolution Support: Act as the first point of contact for data issues and questions within assigned data domains. Coordinate resolution processes with relevant stakeholders.
• Data Domain Stewardship: Act as the subject matter expert for one or more key data domains (e.g., customer, product, finance, supply chain), promoting consistency and appropriate use.
• Change Management and Impact Analysis: Assess the impact of changes to data structures or definitions on downstream systems and business processes.
• Collaboration with Data Governance: Partner with the Data Governance team to implement policies, stewardship models, and data ownership frameworks.
• Support Data Projects: Contribute to data-related projects by providing insights on existing data assets, supporting data profiling, and assisting in requirement gathering.
• Training and Communication: Help educate data consumers on correct data usage and the importance of data standards, quality, and governance.
• Data Lineage and Classification: Support the documentation of data flows and classifications, ensuring that sensitive or regulated data is identified and appropriately managed.

PERSONAL PROFILE

• Experience working in a data stewardship, data quality, data governance, or business data management role.
• Strong understanding of master data, reference data, and business data domains in a retail or similar commercial environment.
• Familiarity with data quality concepts, issue resolution workflows, and root cause analysis techniques.
• Experience with data catalogues and metadata management tools (e.g., Alation, Collibra) preferred.
• Working knowledge of relational data structures, data profiling, and basic data querying (e.g., SQL) is advantageous.
• Understanding of data lifecycle, data privacy and protection requirements, and regulatory considerations.
