About the role



Applications are invited for a four-year, fixed-term Departmental Lectureship in Global and Imperial History, tenable from 1 January 2026. The post is based within the Faculty of History the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities in the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Oxford.

This position has been created to support teaching within the Faculty while the substantive postholder serves as Associate Head of Division (Research) for a three-year term, followed by a period of sabbatical. Please note that the appointment is fixed-term and not renewable.

The successful candidate will deliver teaching to undergraduate and graduate students, engage in advanced study, and undertake independent research in the field of Global and Imperial History. They will contribute to and help organise relevant courses at both undergraduate and Master's levels, including:

Lectures for the European and World History 11 undergraduate paper (Imperial & Global History, 1750-1930);

Teaching on the MSt in Global and Imperial History

Participation in the DPhil training seminar in Global and Imperial History

Designing and delivering their own MSt option paper

The appointee will focus their teaching and supervision in the area of Global and Imperial History and will also have scope to pursue and develop their own research interests within the field.

About you



Applicants should hold a doctorate in a relevant field, or be able to provide evidence that it is near completion--such as having submitted a dissertation, subject to successful examination. They must demonstrate a strong aptitude for teaching, the ability to inspire and engage students, and a proven record of effective teaching in Global and Imperial History.

Candidates should possess sufficient depth and breadth of subject knowledge to contribute to course development and formulate research proposals. The ability to undertake administrative responsibilities--such as coordinating an undergraduate cohort or leading a core undergraduate course--is essential. A publication record appropriate to career stage, along with a thorough familiarity with the current literature and research in Global and Imperial History, is also essential.
