About us
The Departmental Safety and Facilities Manager will be based within the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN) at UCL. The LCN is an interdisciplinary enterprise between University College London, King's College London and Imperial College London. In bringing together world-class infrastructure and leading nanotechnology research activities, the Centre aims to attain the critical mass to compete with the best facilities abroad. The LCN has strong relationships with the broader nanotechnology and commercial communities, and is involved in much major collaboration. As the world's only such facility to be located in the heart of a metropolis, LCN has superb access to corporate, investment and industrial partners. LCN is at the forefront of training in nanotechnology, and has a strong media presence aimed at educating the public and bringing transparency to this emerging science. This role relates entirely to the UCL component of the LCN, which operates as an independent research department within the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MAPS).
About the role
The post holder will be expected to provide professional advice to the Director of the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN) and members of the LCN on all aspects of health, safety and welfare as they may affect staff, students, visitors and any other persons working in or visiting the LCN. They must ensure the LCN is compliant with safety legislation and University policy and to provide a complete safety service in order to ensure a safe working environment for staff, students, visitors and contractors throughout the building and to promote a culture of safe working. This will require a sound understanding of both safety and science in order to interpret legislation and provide working solutions to ensure compliance.
This will include responsibility for the organisation of a range of safety activities and inspections on all aspects of a wide range of techniques e.g. chemical, electrical, radiological, biological and mechanical safety. Additionally, they will be expected to develop in-depth knowledge of the building's fabric as well as of the individual laboratory requirements, to maintain and upgrade the building's fixtures as required, plan and organise all necessary works to install new equipment, facilitate new research programmes and review requirements to maintain the building fabric in good working order, liaising with scientists and Estates as required.
This will also include monitoring the building's status online via the Building Management System and inform users of any issues as they arise. The postholder will also be expected to act as a main point of contact between the Department and UCL Estates for the reporting and progression of all maintenance works within the building, including both the UCL Estates Helpdesk and the Project Team.
This is a 12 month fixed term post, providing adoption leave cover within the department. The role holder is expected to be on site >80% of the time, with occasional remote work permitted.
About you
Extensive experience of operational health and safety management in a research environment, including most importantly a working knowledge of the implementation of Health and Safety legislation; Proven record of successful laboratory/facilities management in at least one of the following fields: general physical sciences, biomedical sciences and electronics/micromechanical systems; Extensive experience of working with Estates management, preferably in a higher education or scientific environment
