The Deputy Manager will be confident, work well to their own initiative, possess excellent communication skills, be a good decision maker and have the ability develop staff to their full potential.
Purpose of the Role of Deputy Manager:
To assist the Registered Manager in maintaining the smooth running of the home by promoting a harmonious culture by co-ordinating, supervising, directing and facilitating the team in delivering high standards of care. Protection and support to the children and young people by facilitating their physical, psychological, emotional and social development.
Abilities required and duties for the Role of Deputy Manager include but are not limited to:
The ability to manage the home in the Manager's absence, to a high standard.
The ability to take responsibility for delivering care and support to the young people.
The ability to ensure the home meets its regulatory and legislation requirements.
The ability to work in accordance with the Children's Homes Regulations and Quality
Standards for Children's homes and co-operate with any inspection process.
The ability to manage and lead the staff team and to offer support and guidance during On-Call duties.
The ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both with colleagues and children, verbally and in writing.
The ability to motivate, aid and guide children in their self-development, and to have a good understanding of the needs of children with disabilities.
The ability to listen and respond both responsibly and appropriately with sensitivity.
Ability to manage children who display disruptive or challenging behaviour and to guide/direct staff in managing that behaviour.
Ability to manage and take direct responsibility for staff performance and training.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and observe data protection guidelines.
Contribute to the monitoring of the quality of recording within the service, ensuring records are complete and contain all the required information, both in terms of detail and language used, and that follow up actions are completed within statutory timescales
Support and training for staff on how to complete reports appropriately, including feedback where reporting doesn't meet the required standard or expectations - mentoring staff to develop in this area and when necessary, contributing to more formal performance management processes
Formal and informal supervision, appraisal and support of members of the care and ancillary teams, as agreed with the Registered Manager
Contributing to monitoring and performance management processes
Contributing to waking night checks
Rota oversight and management - checking cover in place, arranging cover for vacant shifts, flagging when agency staff needed
Essential Requirements for the Role of Deputy Manager:
Two years experience working in a Children' Home.
Knowledge and experience gained in a supervisory role of a Children's Home.
Hold a Diploma Level 3 in Health and Social Care with Children and Young People.
Be prepared to work early, late and night shifts (including sleep-ins and weekends) on a rota basis.
An in-depth understanding of the Children's Homes Regulations and Guidance, the Social Care Common Inspection Framework and how to translate them into practice that is both compliant and captures all aspects of a child's time with us appropriately
Have a keen eye for detail and the ability to assess, gather and summarise information which needs to be provided to various people effectively
To be confident in supporting and mentoring people, and in challenging poor practice, all with a focus on improving people's skills and confidence
Need to be able to use electronic systems (experience of Clearcare Solutions would be a bonus)
Have an in-depth understanding of working with children with learning disabilities and how we can effectively communicate with them and capture their wishes and feelings
Experience of supervising staff is essential and the willingness to lead by example
Have Strong team working skills
Care sector experience in a professional or personal capacity
Good leadership skills and able to work in challenging circumstances and remain calm when dealing with emergency situations
Able to understand follow and instruct in regards to policies and procedures
Ability to communicate effectively with others verbally and in writing and maintain confidentiality
Have the ability to produce clear, well drafted reports and documents
Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and be flexible and work to tight deadlines, whilst maintaining quality and attention to detail
Have experience of using Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Outlook
