Job Description

The Deputy Nurse Manager is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and monitoring of care needs within the Home, in conjunction with the Nurse Manager. The postholder will also have responsibility for the day-to-day efficient management of the Home in the absence of the Nurse Manager and for providing the employer with such information regarding the affairs of the Home as they may require.

The postholder will be responsible for the supervision of the professional work of the nursing staff and all other staff employed in the Home. He/she will take a key role in ensuring that all statutory and legislative policies, procedures and regulations are implemented and observed within the provisions of the Nursing Homes Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2005.

KEY DUTIES:



Care:



Take responsibility for client care and the running of the Home as designated by the Nurse Manager in his/her absence.

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised care, seeking medical or other interventions as required.

Ensure that all treatments, therapies, procedures and services delivered to residents are adequate and appropriate, in collaboration with the persons in control of the Home and professionals providing care and services to residents.

Ensure that each resident has an individualised Care Plan which is regularly reviewed in line with the company's policies and procedures and NMC guidelines.

Admit and discharge residents in accordance with the relevant procedures.

Assess health and social care needs of new residents, and maintain ongoing assessment and review of all other residents.

In the absence of the Nurse Manager, endeavour to fill any client vacancy by liaising with the relevant Care Managers and assessing suitable clients.

Ensure the collection of any specimens that have to be sent to the surgery/hospital.

Carry out all nursing procedures efficiently and effectively.

Administer prescribed medicines and maintain the appropriate records in line with the company's policies and procedures and NMC guidelines.

Practice maximum integrity in all dealings with residents' personal and financial affairs.

Participate in the evaluation and review of care policies and procedures as and when required.

Ensure that all personal information relating to residents remains confidential.

Record-keeping:



Adhere to all appropriate NMC guidelines/regulations and provide written evidence of such adherence upon request from senior management or regulatory bodies.

Ensure that each resident's Care Plan is regularly reviewed in line with the company's policies and procedures and NMC guidelines.

Maintain all logbooks and records as required by the RQIA and company policy.

Communication:



Maintain effective communications with the Nurse Manager.

Ensure good systems for communication and the dissemination of information, both within the Home and in relation to professional agencies providing services to the Home.

Establish and maintain good relationships between GPs / healthcare professionals and the Home.

Establish and maintain good communication with residents, relatives and the multi-disciplinary team.

Receive relatives and visitors to the Home in a courteous manner and afford time and facilities for dialogue.

Facilitate residents and relatives to make complaints, and assist in the investigation of such complaints.

Ensure a clear and concise handover report is given to all relevant staff members at the end of each shift.

Participate in staff and resident meetings as required.

Budgetary/financial control:



Be aware of the need to manage and maintain budgets agreed by the Nurse Manager and Head Office.

Ensure that all commodities used in the Home are sensibly conserved by all staff members (eg. incontinence pads, wipes, dressings, electricity etc.)

Human Resources:



In conjunction with the Nurse Manager, organise staff members' workloads by forward planning off duty, ensuring that there is sufficient cover.

Adhere to, and implement, all HR policies and procedures.

Participate in the recruitment and selection of new staff members as required.

Carry out performance appraisals and supervision sessions with staff members as required.

In conjunction with the Nurse Manager, monitor and control staff absence.

Participate in disciplinary/grievance meetings as required.

Training & Development:



Supervise and instruct junior and new members of staff in all aspects of their work, giving help and guidance where appropriate.

Carry out staff induction and training programmes as and when required.

Attend all mandatory training as required.

Maintain and improve professional knowledge and clinical expertise.

Health & Safety:



Report to the Nurse Manager any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a resident, colleague, visitor or self.

Understand and ensure the implementation of Manor Healthcare's health & safety policy and fire procedures.

Report to the Nurse Manager and Maintenance Officer any faulty appliances, damaged furniture, equipment or any potential hazard.

In conjunction with the Nurse Manager, carry out monthly risk assessments in line with company policy and procedures.

Ensure that the security of the Home is maintained at all times.

Other:



Assist in the formulation of policies and procedures, quality standards and safe and appropriate practices in the Home, and ensure that all such procedures and practices are observed and monitored.

Grant access to the Home to any Officer of the Health & Social Services Trust and facilitate inspections of the Home by a member of RQIA, or any other organisation as appropriate.

Ensure that the Home is attractively presented at all times.

Promote and ensure the good reputation of Manor Healthcare at all times.

Any other duties as required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:



Essential criteria:

1st Level Nurse, currently registered with NMC; One/two years experience working at a Supervisory level within a Residential or Nursing Home or within a Hospital setting; Post-Registration experience in a supervisory capacity preferably within elderly care; Clinical expertise in professional area of qualification Ability to communicate effectively at all levels Ability to work effectively as part of a team Genuine interest in working with the relevant client group Satisfactory Access NI check and references.
