Role Overview

As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for responsible for the production of high-quality bid and design solutions.

Working closely with the customer and accounting teams, refining the requirements, providing guidance and assist with strategy, resulting in solutions that are deliverable, operational and commercially sound, you will perform as a Subject Matter Expert within your technology field, contactable for technical support, guidance and implementation, while becoming a trusted advisor to internal and external customers.

In addition, the Design Engineer will maintain an up to date knowledge on new network and Telecommunications technologies, where appropriate, providing recommendations and test strategies for technology evolution, ensuring systems are aligned to customer strategy, meeting customer requirements and ensuring network stability and offering a sustainable support model.

Key Duties and responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the network provider\'s planning team to understand the design plan for the SDH and or DWDM transmission networks that you will be required to install and or maintain.
  • Conduct survey if requested to evaluate technical requirements for network expansion or upgrades.
  • Configure SDH and DWDM network equipment, including multiplexers, add-drop multiplexers, optical amplifiers, transceivers, and wavelength routers.
  • Install, test, and commission new equipment and ensure seamless integration with existing network elements.
  • Perform equipment software and firmware upgrades as per network provider\'s planning documentation.
  • Ability to monitor the performance of SDH and DWDM transmission networks using network management systems and performance tools if required by network provider.
  • Identify and troubleshoot network issues, including signal degradation, equipment failures, and network outages.
  • Collaborate with other teams, including transport, IP, and core network teams, to ensure end-to-end service delivery and troubleshooting.
  • Prepare reports on network failures and actions taken to rectify issues to share with management and stakeholders.
What we are looking for
  • At least 5 years\' experience in dealing with SME or larger customers in a technical, solution design or consultancy role.
  • Good presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound understanding of best practice in design methodology, Telco business processes and frameworks (eTOM or ITIL) used to deliver complex solutions
  • Good understanding of concepts of High Level Design, Low Level Design and Bill of Materials and conversant with developing project costing.
  • Experienced in the Microsoft Office Suite and CAD software such as Visio and Autocad.
Our ideal candidate will be fully conversant in the design, definition of standards, testing requirements and bringing into service of;
  • Mission-critical, Black-Start compliant, low latency network and services using SDH / PDH and MPLS / IP technology over a mix of fibre, microwave radio and 3rd party \xe2\x80\x9cleased line\xe2\x80\x9d products including Openreach EAD and OSA
  • IP Network including good understanding of components of a Layer 2 & Layer 3 network, design of WAN, LAN and services
  • SDH/PDH technology and design of low latency sub-rate services including V & X data, Voice Frequency and Optical Teleprotection (IEEE C37.94)
  • Fibre systems including fibre characteristics, electrical utility fibre deployment, ground deploy and 3rd party fibre
  • Telecoms installation in electrical substation environment
  • Design of DC power supply and battery systems
  • Microwave radio (eg SIAE Electronica ALC+, AGS20)
  • Copper xDSL products including services via BT WBMC and SHDSL over copper \xe2\x80\x9cpilot\xe2\x80\x9d cables
  • Synchronisation networks (PRC, SSU, SEC, frequency, NTP and PTP)
  • Satellite services - E.g. BGAN and T-SAT services
