This role is open to all Police Staff / external candidates who meet the essential criteria of the person spec, regardless of current grade.

About the team



The Custody Cadre consists of five teams providing cover 24/7. Each team has three Custody Sergeants and two detention officers.

About the role



As part of the custody team, you will be responsible for the safe detention and welfare of detainees within the custody suite. Your shift pattern will be aligned with a custody team and work a 6 on 4 off pattern, this will be a mixture of early, late and night shifts. You will deal with a variety of different people on a daily basis including juveniles, vulnerable persons and high-risk detainees. You will deal with some challenging situations so excellent communication skills are essential to be able to de escalate volatile situations. The role can also be very rewarding, you will be involved in supporting vulnerable persons whilst in custody and assist them in getting support whilst in custody and helping with ongoing support on release.


Responsibilities



In this role, you will be required to:


Assist the Custody Officer with the booking in process, recording property, searching detainees, contacting solicitors and making health care requests.*

Take fingerprints, photographs, DNA samples in line with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act.*

Conduct regular welfare cell visits with detainees, provide meals/drinks and ensure the detainees welfare requirements are met.*

Make referrals to support services for vulnerable detainees*

Make accurate entries to the electronic custody system.*

Requirements



For this role, we need you to have experience of:


Proven planning and organisation skills Effective written and oral communication skills Excellent IT skills, including the ability to learn In-Force IT systems Ability to work effectively as a team member and build excellent working relationships Ability to learn and apply the relevant legislation as well as Force Policies and procedures.

Selection Process



As part of the initial application process, you will be asked to evidence how your experience, skills, and knowledge demonstrate your ability to meet the person specification of the role.


The application and interview will be tested under Level 1 of the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework.


Applicants who fail to address the skills/knowledge/experience of the job description will not be considered.
