Overview
We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Mechanical Development Engineer to join our specialist vehicle engineering team, focused on the design and development of horseboxes, minibuses and custom vehicle conversions. This role will play a key part in delivering safe, reliable, and high-quality transport solutions. You'll work across a wide range of mechanical systems -- from chassis modifications and bodywork integration to suspension, loading mechanisms, and interior structures -- ensuring all designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop mechanical components and systems for our vehicles & products.
Modify base vehicle chassis and superstructures (e.g. vans, trucks) for bespoke equestrian and commercial use.
Develop bodywork, interior features and living quarters to customer and regulatory specifications.
Produce detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and BOMs using software such as Onshape or SolidWorks.
Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and cost-effective.
Conduct design validation, including load calculations, stress analysis, and field testing for mechanical performance and durability.
Support the build process by troubleshooting issues and implementing design improvements.
Ensure compliance with relevant automotive and vehicle conversion standards (e.g. VCA, IVA, BS EN standards).
Liaise with suppliers, fabrication teams, and end customers to align technical requirements and quality standards.
Maintain accurate project documentation and contribute to continual product improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Degree or HND/HNC in Mechanical Engineering or Vehicle Engineering (or equivalent practical experience).
Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g. Onshape, SolidWorks, or similar).
Strong knowledge of fabrication techniques, welding, structural frames, and material properties.
Strong communication and project coordination skills.
Strong understanding of DFM principles, with knowledge of risk analysis and tolerance stack-ups.
Confident with prototyping and iterative testing, including hands-on development and troubleshooting.
Desirable Skills
Experience working with low-volume, bespoke or custom-built vehicles.
Knowledge of hydraulic or mechanical lifting systems (e.g. ramps, stabilisers).
Understanding of vehicle electrics, lighting, and auxiliary systems integration.
Hands-on workshop or build experience is highly beneficial.
Familiarity with equestrian transport needs and customer expectations.
Good understanding of applicable safety and regulatory standards, such as series or Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA).
Practical understanding of vehicle load dynamics, weight distribution, and structural integrity for horse or passenger transport.
