Job Description

The post holder will be part of the Family Integrated Care (FIC) Team and will be specifically responsible for providing clinical support and expertise within the Neonatal Unit in all aspects of family integrated care and developmental care. The post holder will promote the evidence-based practice of the individualised partnership of parents and the wider family into the neonatal unit and be responsible for the training and education of all health professionals and share specialist knowledge with other groups and agencies. You will lead, implement and evaluate BLISS baby charter accreditation and initiatives that ensure best practice standards and support the neonatal unit development through the accreditation levels.

Main duties of the job
As part of our commitment to patients and delivery of a world class service for all we have created the UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) System in partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle; this involves a structured approach to removing waste and putting the patient first using a lean management system and methodologies. Our culture and ways of working reflect and embed the practices and methodologies of UHCWi. You are expected, where identified, to attend and complete relevant training and development opportunities to support this. This may include Lean for Leaders, Advanced Lean Training, and the Human Factors Programme, amongst others. Full attendance and completion of identified courses is considered essential and a prerequisite for this post.

Job responsibilities

• Provide specialist expertise and advice in the clinical areas with regards to Family Integrated and Developmental Care.
• Monitor and maintain standards of care in accordance with the Trust policies, Guidelines, Protocols and Professional Regulations. Contribute to the development of clinical governance systems and structures, ensuring clinical area representation as appropriate
• Contribute to and support clinical effectiveness and innovative practice within the provision of care
• Develop and undertake clinical audits. Evaluate local services against national standards/recommendations to ensure we deliver evidenced based care and best practice including establishing and implementing protocols and guidelines for the trust
• Respond to relevant Clinical Incident Reports and develop strategies to address deficits in practice
• Adopt a multi professional approach to care with mothers, families, health care professionals and other agencies and organisations e.g. UNICEF, Bliss, WMNODN (West Midlands Neonatal ODN).
• Be responsible for ordering, distributing, and monitoring of equipment and resources for family integrated and developmental care purposes. Monitor and contribute to budget control of FIC and developmental care equipment and resources.
• Ensure the safe working order of FIC and developmental care resources. Teach and advise staff and parents how to use FIC and developmental care equipment safely and access available resources.
• Provide clinical expertise and practical assistance on the unit to assist families to overcome complex issues and provide specialist input developing plans of care.
• Advise the clinical areas to provide care that is family focussed and developmentally supportive, working closely with the Infant Feeding Lead and AHPs.
• Support clinical nursing shifts in all areas on the Neonatal Unit at times of high acuity as required under the direction of the management team. Shifts may vary from normal working hours.
• The post holder will be expected to have a good understanding of the Infant Feeding specialist nurses role as they will be required to support in their absence.
