Key Responsibilities for groundworker is performing pipe work carries out several specific duties:
Site Preparation:
Clearing the site and digging trenches to the required depths and gradients using hand tools or heavy machinery like excavators.
Installation:
Laying pipes of various materials (e.g., PVC, concrete) in the trenches. This includes installing associated structures like manholes and inspection chambers.
Precision and Alignment:
Using levels or laser equipment to ensure the correct slope (gradient) for proper water and waste flow, which is critical for drainage systems.
Joining and Sealing:
Cutting pipes to the correct lengths and joining sections securely using various methods like welding, cement, or glue, ensuring all joints are sealed to prevent leaks.
Following Plans:
Interpreting and following engineering blueprints, site plans, and specifications to ensure the pipe layout is accurate and coordinates with other trades on site.
Backfilling:
Once pipes are installed and approved (often requiring inspections from utility companies), the groundworker backfills the trenches with earth or other specified materials.
Safety and Regulations:
Adhering strictly to health and safety procedures and industry regulations, which may involve obtaining necessary permissions for working around existing utility lines or building over sewers.
Skills and Training Individuals in this role typically require:
Experience in groundworks or pipe fitting.
A valid CSCS card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) is often an essential requirement for working on UK construction sites.
Knowledge of water fittings regulations and relevant approved training programmes, such as those approved by Water Regs UK.
Competence with a range of hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery.
This work is foundational to virtually all construction projects, from new housing developments to large-scale infrastructure projects
