Orbis is an international eye care charity that works tirelessly to prevent and treat avoidable blindness and visual impairment. Across the world today 1.1 billion people are living with vision loss, yet 90% is avoidable. Vision loss can prevent children from learning and adults from working, and it affects women, older people, and families on low incomes the most.

Since Orbis began in 1982, alongside our partners, we have trained hundreds of thousands of medical professionals and carried out millions of treatments across almost 100 countries. We screen for and treat eye conditions, raise awareness about eye health, and train and mentor local eye care teams in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

We are now looking for a motivated and high calibre Director of Finance & Operations. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this is a key role within the senior management team providing strategic and financial leadership for the charity. With oversight for finance, legal & governance, IT, HR and business support, this role and the teams represented, underpin Orbis UK\'s work and ensures we are providing the highest standards of service throughout the organisation.

Key responsibilities:

  • Working with the senior management team to provide collective leadership for the charity.
  • Leading the finance function to ensure the charity is run on sound financial principles and that strategic decisions are based on detailed financial evidence.
  • Working closely with colleagues across the charity on all financial matters, including partnering with the fundraising and programme funding teams.
  • Oversee the IT strategy, systems and infrastructure to ensure that it is responsive to the needs of the organisation and employees.
  • Provide leadership and support to the Business Support Manager and HR Advisor on matters including recruitment and retention, facilities and health & safety.
  • Nurture and embed a true team culture within the directorate ensuring balanced workloads, personal development and colleague engagement are at the highest levels.
The successful candidate will be CCAB qualified and will be able to demonstrate:
  • A knowledge of charity accounting and governance including the preparation of accounts to Charity SORP.
  • Strategic and financial planning, such as activity costing, benchmarking and KPIs.
  • Successfully leading and inspiring a diverse specialist team.
  • The ability to challenge and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
