Teaching and training are a central part of our mission as both a research and clinical institution. Our vision is the growth of a world-class post-graduate training programme in psychiatry which attracts, trains and retains residents of the highest calibre from an international pool. We want to continue the Maudsley as the premier destination to train in clinical and academic psychiatry within the UK and Europe. Our ambition is to produce the next generation of outstanding national and international clinicians, academics and leaders of our field, and we want the DPGME to be at the forefront of this.



Working closely with the Chief Medical Officer, this post-holder will develop a Trust-wide strategy and build on past achievements and developments for excellence in postgraduate psychiatric training from foundation level through to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of existing consultants. To assist with this, we have extended the sessional time available to this post, to a six PA position.

We see the remit of this post as covering 5 broad areas:

Leadership and delivery of a new post-graduate strategy and service, aiming to deliver the best training available anywhere. Providing strategic oversight, and drawing together an ambitious and collegiate teaching faculty.



Encouraging development of the very best residents, including through being an ambassador for SLAM and the IoPPN locally, nationally, and internationally.



Ensuring the quality of training posts, through establishing and maintaining high expectations for such, and managing any difficulties that arise therein in a timely manner.



Advocacy for, and pastoral care of, residents, making our training individualised, supportive, and nurturing to residents' varying needs and ambitions. Creating a positive esprit de corps amongst the residents, facilitating their engagement with training and the Trust, and fostering a strong cultural element to the training programmes.

ensuring that our offer remains up-to-date, relevant for examinations and other training, and, moreover, that it is cutting edge, tapping into the world-class expertise available at SLAM and the IoPPN.



South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) hosts the largest post-graduate psychiatry training programme in Europe (over 250 training posts across FY1-ST8). It is unique in British psychiatry, not least through its proximity to the research hub of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London and the King's College London School of Medicine. It has a long and storied history as an international centre of excellence, and has trained some of the world's most eminent clinicians, academics, and leaders, many of whom subsequently contributed to this teaching. The SLAM Director of Postgraduate Medical Education (DPGME) is a career-defining opportunity to help sculpt that process and develop the next generation of psychiatrists.



Both the Trust and the Institute are members of Kings Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (the AHSC). The rotations offer residents exposure to a diverse and unrivalled range of local, specialist and national services provided by SLaM - in collaboration with our partner training Trust, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust - spread over eight hospital sites and seven south London boroughs.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and management



The postholder will provide strong, ambitious leadership, strategic direction and vision for the assurance, management and delivery of postgraduate medical education in SLaM.

Specific duties :

Leading the planned review of the post-grad strategy, and, subject to Trust approval, delivering its findings and recommendations. The DPGME will have overall managerial responsibility for the Postgraduate Centre and will hold the budget for the running of the centre, with the support of the Manager for Postgraduate Medical Education, whom the DPGME will line manage. The DPGME will have overall responsibility, working with the Trust Finance Department and relevant Finance Business Partners, for the accuracy of and compliance with the EFA (Educational Funding Agreement) in so far as that relates to postgraduate medical education funding streams. The DPGME will be responsible for the recruitment, training and ongoing supervision of Educational Supervisors within the Trust. The DPGME will chair the quarterly Postgraduate Medical Education Board which includes all senior faculty (TPDs and Tutors), administrative staff and trainee representation. The DPGME will have overall responsibility for the individual scheme leads for foundation and GPVTS programmes within the Trust, borough tutors and course leads and will provide additional senior leadership to TPDs across the schemes. To communicate effectively about matters relating to aspects of postgraduate medical education with relevant stakeholders including board members, associate medical directors, clinical directors and senior managers.

Ensuring the quality of training posts



The post holder will be responsible for the quality of the learning environments provided for medical learners defined within their role and champion continuous quality improvement in the provision of medical education in the Trust.

Specific duties :

To work closely with the Manager of Postgraduate Medical Education to re-develop a robust system of quality assurance for training posts, ensuring compliance with GMC standards for postgraduate medical education. To respond to and address all feedback via the GMC National Trainee Survey including any outliers or any patient safety or bullying and undermining concerns. To maintain and review a detailed database of all posts and post holders, including details of the training opportunities and learning objectives offered within each post, the continuing professional development profile of the trainer and feedback on the posts. We are committed to high standards in our training posts, and to the pro-active management of any areas of concern, including the potential of withdrawing training posts where such standards are not met. To monitor the CPD of all clinical and educational supervisors to ensure that they are confident and competent supervisors and to be in a position to report to NHSE on the approval processes and status of all named clinical and educational supervisors in keeping with the Professional Development Framework for Educators and the approach of the General Medical Council (GMC) for the recognition and approval of trainers. To run a programme of faculty development for all medical educators to ensure compliance with the Framework. To develop a remedial intervention for clinical trainers who consistently receive poor feedback from residents and to develop a step-wise process for the removal of training posts which do not provide a high-quality training experience. To be approachable and accessible to residents who are experiencing any significant difficulties.

Specific duties :

To help establish and maintain a strong esprit de corps amongst the resident doctors, and their connectedness with each other, SLAM, and the IoPPN. To nurture residents' individual needs in terms of any personal or professional development, training, or support. To grow a positive culture of enquiry and intellectual vigour, where residents are challenged to be the best doctors they can be, with the widest range of opportunities, whilst maintaining a suitably trusting and safe environment to intellectually develop and question. To establish and maintain a close and collaborative relationship with the Medical Human Resources department in order to ensure that there are clear and fair policies.

Specific duties :

Less than full time training/work, including working with the SuppoRTT Champion in further developing the programme of activities available for residents returning to training following a period of time out of training and the Champion of Less Than Full Time working, so that additional pastoral care is available for the cohorts of residents training less than full time.



To ensure that all FY and core trainees have access to peer mentorship To coordinate the management and ongoing signposting or referral of residents who require additional support. Oversee the management of medical learners who are involved in serious incidents (SI), complaints, conduct and capability investigations to ensure there are appropriate support mechanisms in place and there is an effective reporting structure to inform the learner's responsible officer (normally the Postgraduate Dean/Undergraduate Dean) as appropriate To participate in relevant meetings including Junior Doctor Forum (JDF), Local Negotiating Committees (LNC) and others where input relevant to the role are required. Education and Teaching:

Specific duties :

Review and re-development a high-quality induction programme for residents at all levels of training Further development of the current didactic curriculum for residents The development of further skills-based teaching, small group teaching, problem-based learning, team-based learning to enhance clinical skills To oversee the induction and taught programmes being delivered across boroughs and working with borough tutors to ensure consistency and quality. Training and clinical experience in developing psychotherapy skills (both psychodynamic and also CST and other structured interventions) Training in supervision skills, research skills and management for senior residents Ensuring that there is a comprehensive and attractive package of training available for Consultants working within the Trust in order to facilitate their roles as teachers and supervisors Continuous, systematic review of the effectiveness of education programmes, taking explicit and documented remedial action where appropriate. This will be achieved by the regular formal review of the goals and objectives of the training programme, and the effectiveness with which they are achieved. Trainee performance and outcome assessment is a crucial part of this metric and we would expect the post holder to develop a programme of evaluation which takes these into account.

Developing and supporting the very best resident doctors



The post holder will be expected to be an ambassador for the Trust and the IoPPN locally, nationally, and internationally, promoting the work of the organisations, establishing connections, and bringing the best learning and ideas back to SLAM. They will promote the Trust as a great place to train and work, ensuring that our core standards are met, and act as a positive, engaging front face for those considering training at SLAM.

Specific duties :

To coordinate an overall scheme to maintain the 'brand identity' of the Maudsley Training Programme: advertising, promoting and marketing the programme in order to attract residents of the highest calibre To oversee the development and dissemination of a comprehensive website which is accessible from the major search engines, and which contains relevant and up-to-date information about the rotations and related training opportunities To organise, in partnership with the local foundation lead, a 'taster' series of clinical attachments for foundation year doctors who are interested in applying to the training programme To work with the SAS Lead in implementing the SAS Charter and ensuring SAS Drs Development Funding is maximised to meet the needs of this cohort of doctors in the Trust. To ensure faculty participation in the recruitment process for both core and higher residents. Recruitment is currently run nationally via NHSE. To ensure Trust participation in major career fairs for foundation year doctors in the UK (such as the BMA Careers conference) and act as a spokesperson for the rotation. To lead on the recruitment of key faculty roles as and when they become vacant, ensuring adequate handovers and cover are in place in interim periods if required. To lead on the annual recruitment of the Chief Registrar role, within the timescales prescribed by the Royal College of Physicians, who oversee the scheme. To support the Manager for Postgraduate Medical Education with recruitment of staff in the Postgraduate Medical Education department. To support the CMO and CPO with the development of effective medical workforce strategy and plans.

Rotation Management

Specific duties:

To ensure faculty participation fully in ARCP, support and remediation of residents in difficulty, and to support NHSE in managing time out of programme (OOP), support and guidance for less than full-time training (LTFT) and inter-deanery (IDT) transfers.

While the above is not the sole or primary responsibility of the DPGME, he or she would be expected to work alongside others involved in postgraduate education in order to deliver high quality integrated training based on best educational practice.
