We're looking for a motivated and organised individual to support our furniture shop and donation hub. This role is vital in ensuring donated goods are processed efficiently and to the highest standards, helping us raise funds for patient care.
Job Purpose
To receive, sort, and prepare all types of donated goods for sale or recycling in accordance with Longfield Hospice standards, ensuring maximum value is achieved--including identifying items suitable for e-commerce.
As a Donation Sorter, you'll be responsible for:
Key Responsibilities
Receiving & Sorting Donations
Welcome donors and accept all types of donations (clothing, household goods, furniture, books, electricals, etc.).
Sort items into categories: saleable, recycling, or disposal, following organisational guidelines.
Quality & Compliance Checks
Inspect items for damage, cleanliness, and compliance with safety regulations (e.g., fire safety labels on furniture, PAT testing for electricals).
Identify high-value or specialist items for pricing or referral to the Furniture Manager.
E-Commerce Identification
Spot items with strong resale potential for online platforms (e.g., branded goods, collectibles, high-quality furniture).
Communicate with the e-commerce team to ensure these items are processed appropriately.
Preparation for Sale
In conjunction with the furniture shop manager, label, and price items accurately for display in the furniture shop or other shops.
Cover for Furniture Shop Manager
Provide operational support and leadership in the furniture shop during manager absence.
Oversee daily shop operations, including staff and volunteer coordination, customer service, and cash handling.
Health & Safety
Follow manual handling procedures and use equipment safely.
Assist with moving items between hub, warehouse, and retail areas as needed.
Keep the sorting area clean, organised, and compliant with health and safety standards.
About You
We're looking for someone who is:
Experienced in charity retail, warehousing, or a similar environment.
Skilled in handling and sorting a wide range of goods, clothing, household items, including furniture and electricals.
Experience of e-commerce identification for online sales.
Knowledgeable about manual handling techniques and committed to safe working practices.
Knowledge of furniture safety standards and resale regulations.
Friendly, professional, and hours may need to change to suit needs of business or busy periods. Able to work flexibly, including occasional weekends.
Essential:
GCSEs (Grade C/4 or above) in English and Maths.
Full UK driving licence.
