Job Summary:
The Dry Dock Machinist is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and fabrication of mechanical components and machinery on vessels undergoing Dry Docking. This includes propulsion systems, pumps, valves, shafts, bearings, and other marine mechanical systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Disassemble, inspect, repair, and reassemble marine mechanical components such as pumps, gearboxes, valves, and shaft systems.
Operate manual and CNC machining tools (e.g., lathes, milling machines, grinders, boring machines).
Conduct alignment and fitting of mechanical systems using precision instruments (e.g., micrometers, dial indicators).
Fabricate or modify parts according to engineering drawings or specifications.
Assist in removal and installation of shipboard mechanical equipment in Dry Dock conditions.
Follow technical manuals, blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions.
Ensure all work meets quality and safety standards per maritime regulations (e.g., ABS, DNV, Lloyd's Register).
Maintain and clean tools, machinery, and work areas.
Collaborate with welders, riggers, and other trades during repair or retrofit operations.
Qualifications:
Education:
NV3/HND or equivalent required.
Vocational training or technical certification in Machining or Marine Engineering required.
Experience:
Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a machinist in a Dry Dock or shipyard environment.
Proven experience working with marine propulsion systems and auxiliary equipment.
Skills & Competencies:
Proficiency in operating machine shop tools (manual and CNC).
Strong understanding of marine mechanical systems.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical manuals.
Skilled in measuring tools and precision instruments.
Knowledge of safety and maritime regulations.
Physically fit and able to work in confined spaces, heights, and variable weather conditions.
Team player with good communication skills.
Certifications (Preferred or Required):
OSHA Maritime Safety Training (e.g., OSHA 10 or 30)
Forklift or Crane Operation Certification (as applicable)
Working Conditions:
Work performed in Dry Dock facilities, onboard ships, and occasionally in workshops.
Exposure to noise, dust, grease, confined spaces, and heavy machinery.
Must be able to work shifts, overtime, weekends, and in adverse weather as needed.
