We are currently seeking a skilled Welder/Fabricator with experience in shipbuilding or marine repair to join our team at our dry dock facility in Penzance. You will be responsible for carrying out welding tasks on various types of vessels and marine structures, including fabrication, structural repairs, and modification work in accordance with industry standards and safety regulations.
This is a hands-on, physically demanding role suited to someone with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to high-quality workmanship.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
Perform welding operations on structural steel and aluminium components across all areas of the ship.
Interpret and work from engineering drawings, weld symbols, and specifications.
Carry out MIG, TIG, and MMA (Stick) welding as required.
Conduct welding in all positions, including overhead and vertical.
Operate oxy-fuel cutting and grinding tools safely.
Assist with fitting and assembly of components before and after welding.
Carry out welding work in confined spaces, tanks, and at heights when necessary.
Comply with health & safety regulations, including hot work permits and confined space procedures.
Undertake pre and post-weld inspections, visual checks, and basic non-destructive tests (if trained).
Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas to a high standard of safety and cleanliness.
Work collaboratively with other trades, including fitters, riggers, and pipefitters.
NVQ Level 3 in Welding & Fabrication or equivalent.
Proven experience as a Welder in a shipyard, marine, or heavy industrial environment.
Competent in MIG, TIG, and MMA welding techniques.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and welding symbols.
Knowledge of UK welding standards and marine regulations.
Good understanding of safe systems of work in a dry dock or shipyard setting.
Physically fit and able to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in challenging conditions.
Recognised welding qualifications/certifications (e.g. BS EN ISO 9606-1).
Previous work to Lloyd's Register, DNV, or ABS class approval standards desirable.
Forklift, MEWP, or confined space entry certification. desirable.
Experience in pipe welding or ship fitting is an advantage.
