Job Description

Purpose of the Role



To provide high-quality care, education, and support to children aged 0-5 within the college nursery. The practitioner will create a safe, stimulating, and inclusive environment that promotes children's learning and development in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The role also includes supporting students on childcare courses who may undertake placements within the nursery.

Key Responsibilities


Childcare & Learning



Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate activities in line with the EYFS framework. Observe, assess, and record children's development, ensuring individual needs are met. Support children's personal, social, and emotional development, promoting independence and confidence. Create an inclusive learning environment that meets the needs of all children, including those with SEND.

Safeguarding & Welfare



Ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of all children at all times. Follow safeguarding policies and procedures, reporting concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards in accordance with health and safety requirements. Administer first aid when necessary (if trained and authorised).

Partnership Working



Build positive relationships with parents, carers, and families, providing regular updates on children's progress. Work collaboratively with colleagues across the nursery and wider college community. Support childcare students from the college, offering guidance, modelling best practice, and contributing to their learning experience. Attend team meetings, training sessions, and college events as required.

Operational Responsibilities



Maintain accurate records, including attendance, accident logs, and developmental observations. Contribute to planning, room preparation, and creating stimulating learning environments. Adhere to nursery policies regarding confidentiality, safeguarding, equality, and inclusion. Support the smooth daily running of the room, including mealtimes, nappy changing, toileting, and sleep routines.

Person SpecificationEssential



Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Early Years, Childcare, or equivalent. Knowledge and understanding of the EYFS framework. Experience working with children aged 0-5 in an early years setting. Strong understanding of safeguarding, child protection, and health & safety procedures. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Ability to build positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues. A caring, patient, and professional attitude.
