Ecologist (All Levels) - Bat Licence Level 2 - UK based- Competitive Salary
The Job:
We are seeking passionate and motivated Ecologists at all levels (Assistant, Consultant, and Senior) to join our growing ecology team. The ideal candidate will hold a Natural England Bat Level 2 Licence (or equivalent) and have a strong grounding in ecological survey work, reporting, and environmental legislation. You'll play a key role in delivering a variety of ecological assessments and protected species surveys, supporting planning and development projects across the UK. Depending on your experience, you may also take responsibility for managing projects, mentoring junior colleagues, and liaising directly with clients and regulators.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct bat surveys (activity, emergence/re-entry, roost assessments) and other protected species and habitat surveys
- Prepare technical reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), and mitigation strategies
- Contribute to the design and implementation of mitigation and compensation measures, particularly for bats
- Support licence applications and compliance with relevant wildlife legislation and planning policy
- Maintain accurate records, ensuring all work meets company and regulatory standards
- (For Consultant/Senior roles) Manage ecological projects from inception to completion, including budgeting, scheduling, and client communication
- (For Senior roles) Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior ecologists and field staff.
The Candidate:
Essential:
- Holds a Natural England Bat Level 2 Licence (or equivalent)
- Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology, or related field
- Experience in bat survey methodologies and wider protected species/habitat surveys
- Good understanding of UK wildlife legislation and planning policy
- Competent in report writing and data management
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel and work flexible hours (including evenings for surveys)
Desirable:
- Membership (or eligibility) of CIEEM
- Experience preparing European Protected Species Licence (EPSL) applications
- Proficiency in GIS and ecological data analysis tools
- Experience leading field teams or managing sub-contractors
